Thank you, I knew you could help expand on the usage and advantage of VLANs.
@PhaseLockedLoop thanks for sharing the pihole list. After playing with mine I know how rough it can be to prune it down and or add in needed blocks. Iāve spent hours.
Also, as a side note for people interested. I started to look at x570 atx boardsā¦ Iām noticing a trend here Iām not quite understandingā¦ mid tier AMD boards with three m.2 slots are very limitedā¦ while Intel boards offer a ton of boards with 3 m.2 slots for $200 or so dollars. Maybe I need to look for the B550 versionsā¦ but itās gonna have a 3900 processorā¦ or 3600 havenāt decidedā¦ or Iām just gonna keep the 8086k in service till the zen 3 comes outā¦ Really hoping to change over the gaming rig from intel/nvidia to all AMD. Intels lack of innovation and nvidias greed and my terrible experience with customer service really upset me. Now that de-lidding/direct die cooling is out I can really go either way. I also havenāt given AMD a fair shake till I try a gpu water cooled in a custom loop.
I guess Iām also looking forward to tearing down my build and redoing the hard line custom loop. I have a second 360 rad I hope I can make workā¦ its a cross flow thatās kinda awkward to fitā¦Iāll have to cut down the reservoir size but wonāt effect performance. Iām also trying with putting the pump and reservoir in the back panel of the li lan air case.
So really dumb questionā¦ When I do updates say on my proxmox server, unlike linux and windows that needs a reboot, Do I need to reboot the system itself? Or even services like plex can the container stay open or does it need to be restarted for the changes (like security changes) to take effect?
In theory no you probably donāt need to restart it, but I usually do just to prevent the system from landing in some kind of undefined state where weird things might happen.
If the thing youāre updating is containerized, then you shouldnāt need to restart the whole system, but just that container.
I mean, you could give it a shot. Might be interesting to see exactly where the lines are drawn there.
Proxmox isnāt exactly the best OS to do a 1 year uptime on. It can be done, but I would advise to do a reboot at least every 3-4 months or so. Thatās somewhat of a sweet-spot.
BSDs on the other handā¦ I had like 400+ days uptime on my pfsense box and it was begging for a restart. Given how many boxes with 5+ years uptime Iāve seen, felt, and heard of in my career, that went bonkers after a reboot, Iād rather not take my chances and schedule reboots from time to time.
I just wanted the fameā¦lol Yeah Iād need to use a stable version of an OS versus a edge distro, or bleeding edge distro (I dont think proxmox is this far out there for updates).
Well just wrestled with the updating of PLEX LXC and Proxmox NVIDIA drivers to fix passthroughā¦ Iām starting to realize I probably donāt even need the pass through. Seems all my devices do a Direct Play of the file without needing to āTranscodeāā¦ even with H265 HVEC videos.
I guess I was under the impression having this pass through would help my DVR on plex to use the GPU to help with processing DVR recordings instead of relying on the CPUā¦ It seems this is not the case and it makes me wonder why?
The LXC utilizes 6 Cores to stay below 100% useage. When I used 4 cores it would get up to 90% or above if it had to code more than 3 shows at a time. With 6 it ustilizes roughly 30% per show and up to 80% max spikes with up to 3 shows being processed concurrently.
Why wouldnāt software that CAN utilize a GPU resource to transcode video data NOT use it and rely on the CPU to process DVR recordings? I would think it would allow the recordings to be much smaller than 1GB an hour roughly at 720p maybe using HVEC.
Heres the settings-
Alsoā¦ anyone know the ābestā drive or type to use for a DVR? I ended up using a WD Purple I had laying around. It was from my previous DVR for home security I patched together.
From reading the specs on it (Wear, hard coded firmware dedicated for video processing and viewing) it seemed like a good choice. Because I record close to 10 hours a day depending of OTA (Over the Air TV) via HD Homerun Quadro and two MOHA Antennas.
I need something reliable (This drive touts a workload of 180TB/year and a 1 Million hour MTBF[Mean Time Between Failures]).
I think I would need a TLC or SLC SSD to keep durability (QLC Iād be concerned about)ā¦
Also, having a HDD, if it does fail, its fairly cheap to replace. Especially for the drive size I use thatās 2TB at least.
I can NVR (Plex DVR) record 4 shows at once and watch a show currently without any issue with recordings and or playback (that Iāve noticed) on this HDD and its only 5400rpm.
I know this is kind of scatteredā¦ I keep bouncing from one thing to the next. Any discussion or comments are very welcome.
Well, back to the drawing board with my piholeā¦ for whatever reason the list created by @PhaseLockedLoop cases my phone to not accept incoming call over wifiā¦ it may be my settings never fully got overridenā¦ I did the clean install option from the file on git hubā¦ Im not sure what Im missingā¦ but it did allow me to narrow down what other blocks kept my devices from working properly. I also reworked my firewall rules so I think they are more sane and condensed like they should have been.
I need a way to review the firewalls actions with just my phones ipā¦ Im sure its there like I found in piholeā¦ I just want to be sure thats not the culprit. Then I need some data on my phone and what its doing via pihole. Im sure Ill see something out of orderā¦ the texts not going out is another problem I never fully solved either. I would have to disconnect then reconnect to my wifi and it sends fineā¦ there was no one ip being blocked that seemed to fix thisā¦and because it is intermittent it makes it a pain in the ass to troubleshootā¦ I had the same problem working on carsā¦ people wantibg rhings fixed that only did it sometimesā¦lol I know how they feel and how I feel still trying to solve intermittent issuesā¦ug.
BUT doing it over and over has helped me identify the issues with other devices much easier. So its been fun.
Well had issues with most recent Plex version and needed to update to beta version 1.26.1.5798
ā¦ The DVR function had issues recording only some shows arbitrarily and not others. It showed recorded properly but there was no file to watch. Weird.
So I was working on figuring out how to apply for the beta version by editing my /etc/apt/sources.list.d/plexmediaserver.list
from deb https://downloads.plex.tv/repo/deb/ public main
to something else that would pull the beta version. Turns out this isnt possible. WHYYYYYY lol
Plex has a option to auto-update to either version on windows and some other systems but it wont work for Linuxā¦Boo. There has to be some script out there Iām sure, but because Iām not 100% sure how to use those/what they do exactly Iām not going to risk it lol.
So I ended up downloading the version with wget into my LXC container, the using dpkg -i
to install it over current plex versionā¦done then a Refresh Guide to repopulate all the showsā¦ will see if it works tomorrow am. Eventually Iāll have to delete those files, its in my notes or create a downloads file.
And now I dive into something Ive never really doneā¦ I will attempt a post processing script for my DVR recordings. I have a gtx 1650 super in the serverā¦time to put it to useā¦ wish me luck lol
My plan is to review some that have been made to assess the varibles used, software and hardware utilized and see if I can make it happen. Ill also scower plexes forums as well and faqd and guides to help me along in this quest to lower my dvr drive storage useage lol. A hour of 720 tv is taking up 1.2 GBā¦ sure i can shrink it down past 1000 easy without losing too much definition.
From what im reading, handbrake is usedā¦but alot of the posts I read were over 4 years old when DVR was un betaā¦ so could be interestingā¦
Donāt go with SSDs, with the amount of writes you do, an HDD is still a better option. Another WD Purple or a Seagate SkyHawk (preferably one of the Helium filled drives) would do. Not sure what model Toshiba / Kioxia has for surveillance HDDs.
Use apt install /path/to/file.deb
instead, apt also installs missing dependencies. Or if you are going to use dpkg -i file.deb
, immediately follow with an apt install -f
afterwards, which means āinstall missing dependencies.ā
Oh fantastic great to know! I had no Idea about this. I had attempted chmod +x
then ./
but thats for .run
files duhā¦brain fart moment.
Least it came back it wasnāt missing anything. I think I had done the original install with that command not sure how I got dpkg -i
ā¦ I was reviewing some other sources on installing .deb
files.
Why I need to live in CLI land more often. Despite ease of GUI.
Well, I may have figured out my power problemā¦ somehow, when I run my gaming computer on my monitor over the display port the power trips randomly (10min up to an hour) under load gaming or just web browsing, BUT if I play on my TV over hdmi the thing hasnt tripped in hours and hoursā¦ come to think of it I dunno if Ive ever tripped it on the tvā¦
Im going to try a cable first, as when I run another pc on that monitor I have no issuesā¦ it would be really weird, but stranger things have happened I guessā¦
I may also try running another pc at the same time as the gaming rig on the tv to see whats going on there and if I have a wider band of what I can run or not in my office allowing me to have more things local over hardline vs wifi like the home server and a test server.
Andddddd the cable didnt do itā¦ now im wondering if my old Monster surge protector is a culprit, Id think it would trip before the breaker. Maybe Iāll try another one just to see. Maybe find one thats rated at 15 amps. Maybe mine is 20 ampsā¦ still bumbed im so limited on what I can run in the office.
Well New PC has been built/Swapped Parts. I went with 3900XT in the ASUS ROG X570i Mobo, G.Skills 32 2 Dimm at 3600 with 16-19-19-38, the RTX 2080TI, and used the SFX Corsair 750W PSU. This is all cooled with a EK PWM DDC Pump, and Hardware Labs GTX 280mm by 54mm rad. All In the Phanteks Evolve Shift X Original case with a Modified CNC machined front Panel. No Trips of the breaker so far for two days. Still running tests. Had a few āpuckerā moments. A No POSTā¦ the CMOS clear is really weird for this board, also any bump of the RAM can cause the issue with how its seated. I had to ask my wife for the boot light color code (Color blind)ā¦that was embarrassing but I found the problem with that easy. Then I replaced a drive and bumped the connection for the Corsair Commander pro and had no fans for a hour or so or pumpā¦CPU got up to 85C and ssds got up to 75Cā¦EEEEKKKKK no permanent damageā¦
Obligatory pictures
I put pantyhose as a fine nylon filter Hey it was better than the default plastic with holes in itā¦
Glass off to Cool it down LOL
I put pantyhose as a fine nylon filter
Fuck, thatās so obvious, why didnāt I think of that. Now I have my solution to a problem, thanks!
LOL, took me a second to come up that. I didnt like how the plastic filters with holes limited air flow. I liked the nylon filters, but some didnāt work for certain applicationsā¦ Then I thought āHey arenāt pantyhose nylon?āā¦BOOMā¦light bulb. I stretched it to fitā¦tacked it in place stretched out evenly with hot glue, cut off the excess and bamā¦custom nylon filter It does get dirty, but I can blow it off or wipe with microfiber.
Glad it gave you an idea to help ya out!
Heres a Few more pics of it.
I love that wall clock. Authentic or replica?
