New Graphics Card for Modded Skyrim

Hey Guys,

I'm looking to buy a replacement card i think the current graphics card i have can't really keep up atm i'm using a EVGA GTX 760 2GB but i have read on some forums that a card with more v-ram would be better for modded skyrim i would like to get a 4GB card, I might end up doing some video encoding aswell

I don't really want to go with AMD i have heard that AMD cards don't really work that good compare to nvidia i was looking to see if i could get a ASUS GTX770 4GB but hardly any places don't have this card anymore is this card a EOL.

Just want to get some advice if there is any people on this forum play modded skyrim btw my budget is about $500 AUD.

Thank you all.

AMD cards works very well, and, at least with this generation, generally have better price/performance than nVidia.

That said, Skyrim is incredibly, incredibly nVidia biased. I'd recommend getting a GTX 780 if that's in your budget; I don't think a GTX 770 4GB would be much of an upgrade over a 760, even though it has 4 GB compared to the 3 GB of the 780.

I use a 780 for modded Skyrim, and it does a brilliant job at 1440p. If you wish to stick with Nvidia, the 780 is the card for you.

However, you should give serious consideration to the R9 290 4GB. Skyrim mods love AMD drivers. The R9 290 is so much cheaper than the 780, and the 290 comes with a few free games.

There's nothing wrong with AMD. What you've heard, is just fanboy nonsense. For running mods, AMD are always my go-to recommendation. Their cards are geared in a way that makes them preferable e.g more Vram.

Since when do Skyrim mods love AMD drivers? I've never heard that before. I've always been under the impression the nvidia was the go-to choice for Skyrim, especially modded Skyrim (assuming a 3+ GB card).

Vanilla Skyrim, yes. It was an Nvidia optimised game.

But AMD gets all the performance benefit in modded Skyrim. A 7970 can equal or better a 780. Nvidia drivers would clash with some ENBs and lighting mods, causing the game to be unstable and crash.

Huh I never knew that.

I suppose the R9 290 would be a really good card for the OP then.

Yeah, it was brought to my attention in one of Logan's streams. Pistol had less performance degradation on her older AMD system, in comparison to Logan. Also, other members of the community that "upgraded" to the 780 and found that their older 79xx cards would perform similarly with mods.

I suppose it may have changed, but the R9 290 is going to perform equally well, regardless. So why not get the cheaper card?

I would love to get a 780 but the problem is the price stores in OZ want $599.00, i have been looking at R9 290 the biggest problem is imo most of them have no back plate, the range is limited for most video cards in OZ

I think the MSI Twin Frozr has a black back plate.

I suppose I should maybe try tinkering around with ENB on my 7950 then. I really like the Poupouri ENB that Logan uses, but as soon it's installed Skyrim immediately goes down to 30 fps max, and often 25 or lower. Even when overclocked to 1100 Mhz core.

its nice but i had problems with MSI products in the past also the MSI one in the picture its not a full back plate, if i went with a R9 290 the only other choice i have is ASUS

I've had problems with MSI motherboards, but their GPUs are solid.

I would tell you to avoid the ASUS, I heard there could be problems with the way the heatsink is placed on the card. I mean, ASUS are good, but some people are reporting problems. Enough that it has gotten some attention.

The biggest problem is i don't really have much of a choice, so i'm kinda stuck and there is not much range in the R9 290 the place where i'm going to get it from they only have 5 choices in R9 290

GTX 780's the cheapest being Gigabyte.  But I would save up another $99 and grab the Asus.

More ram, Back plate and more than double the cuda cores that you have.  A 4GB 770 would be a waste of money.

There is a Gigabyte 770 4GB at mwave but the gpu itself isn't really powerful enough to handle skyrim once you've gone past 2.5 GB usage.  And it's just not that much faster from what you already have to justify blowing over $400 on.

Your next best bet is AMD, but it seems that Nvidia has a definate edge in performance when it comes to Skyrim depending on which tier of card you choose of course.

True, but i'm not the greatest AMD fan around i understand that i would get more v-ram bye going with AMD but imo Nvidia still makes the better GPU i know some people will not like me bye saying that but thats just my Opinion, everytime i have own a AMD GPU i have been disappointment and ended up going back to Nvidia, but for me i find Nvidia runs smoother for me.

Thanks for the advice
