Really, if you plan on gaming at anything more than 1280x1024, it's not going to cut it. This is more of an HTPC oriented card. If you can save up a little bit more (around 100$), or convince your parents to buy you a card that's a little bit more expansive, you could probably get a nice deal in a couple of days on something a bit meatier like a 5750 or 5770. Boxing day is just around the corner, so chances are online retailers will have cute deals.
Either way, at a fairly low resolution you should be able to handle most games fine.
To be honest, I would just get a 400 or 500 series Nvidia card. The 220 is kinda old and weak. And just on the subject of PC upgrades, I would also get a couple more GBs of RAM if I was you.

His RAM is fine if all he does is gaming. It really doesn't require more than that honestly..

4GB is more than enough for what he would be using it for. Really.

to be honest, i really dont intend to be playing the newer games. mostly CSS, CS 1.6, TF2, Crysis, Crysis warhead. those sorts of games and really im just looking for a one year solution. i will buy a much better card next year.
like green said go with a little powerful card like GTX 460<<(its very affordable now days), 5750 or 5770, in the end u will be glad u did especially if u want to game on high resolution settings and maxed-out.
Even if it isnt totally new, the Crysis series is still the most gpu stressing games out there. A GT220 would indeed get some problems running them smoothly

been looking around youtube, the GT220 seems to run the game fine on dual core 2.8ghz 1280x720. seems like i can run it fine.
and as i mentioned before, its just a 1 year solution and its 1 day to Christmas so i am not going to change it now OBV, i am waiting till next year when some much better cards come out.
@pantyhandler
lol gta was so much fun, the ingame radio stations were really funny
ran it on ati rage 128 integrated on an amd k6-2 500mhz
I wish I remembered the rest of my system specs. My parents bought a clone and I cant for the life of me remember the chip-set. I do know I fought hard for that VooDoo though :)
