New gpu help (780, 770sli or 280x cf)

Hello I am new here, found this from youtube. i really like the videos. Anyway lets get to the point...

I need some tech advice. I turned in my old gpu I got and I have to pick my replacement now. I do photography and lots of gaming with moding. I am between Asus gtx780 Direct CUii OC, Gigabyte windforce 3x OC and Asus 280x TOP OC.

If I get 780 I will stick with single card solution. Anything other than that I will sli it or crossfire it. Many tell me to pick a 290 reference, but its away to hot and I live in a very hot country at summer times! My old card advertised as 89-92c but at summer you could see up to 100-105c, that makes me to stay away from it, except if I have to. So any help here?

Asus 280x is a free replacement.

Asus gtx780 I have to pay 130 euros

Gibabyte 770 4gb version, I must pay them 36 euros.

Programs I use : Photoshop, after effects, some premiere or other video edit programs. I also have secondary question about Gigabyte gtx770 4gb, its advertised as dx11.1 card, I send a question to gigabyte and they said its a modified chip and this info is directly from Nvidia, is it true? I think I covered up everything. Thanks again for your time.

I have a 290 reference, the issue is the fan, even with the new 'fix' drivers runs at low speeds.

I have used MSI afterburner to lock the fan at 40-50% which is not too loud and I even managed a stable overclock - with this done, in Australia's humidity and heat it peaks at 70 degrees Celsius, thats on a 32c day ambient temp.

The price for the 290 plus the sheer performance means it simply cannot be overlooked.

If you have to look elsewhere though I would say go for the 780 but you will be burning money needlessly afaik.

In my country summer times is 40-50c .And I couldn't play video games with my old gpu. It was advertised as 89-92c, but at summer it increased up to 100-105c. Thats not the only problem, all this heat, moves into the room and its a very unpleasant experience!

Thats the reason I excluded it.

Wait for non reference coolers and if its hot why not just turn up the ac.

If it gets that hot over there its water block time no extra heat being dumped in to your room and no hot cards..

Thats what I do :) I turn on the A/C... I dont have the time for aftermarket coolers because its a replacement and the distributor awaits for me to choose a card from their list. Thats sad, Amd delayed the aftermarket cooling solutions. So lets say I have only these options, 290 is also available in their list, but as a reference. What shall I pick as a suggestion? Really bad timing for me to get a card.

My pc case is HAF XM and my psu is AX850 corsair. If I get 290 reference card, I will also have to pay 36 euros (36 euros is like 50 bucks, or 25 pounds). I can water cool it? Is there any ready solutions? But I am afraid I will void the warranty.

You can water cool it, its going to cost you a bit to get a water-block and of course you'll need to have a pump, rad ect or its not going to be much use, but all in all if you want a cool quiet AMD R9 290 or R9 290X its really the only option, lets face it aftermarket coolers are no magic bullet, they're going to just move the heat into your case in exchange for a few more cfm and slightly reduced fan noise.. As for the warranty I couldn't tell you, but if you run the card for a few weeks before installing the water-block you'll be fine as its fairly rare for a card to die suddenly after weeks of no problems, normally when you RMA its almost immediately. Personally I'd go the GTX780 if you have the money, custom water-cooling is not a cost effective option on a price to performance side of things, so the GTX770\780 is the quieter, cooler card. Having said all that all the cards your mentioning thermally limit clock speed, so expect slightly lower performance as it gets hotter but none of them will actually overheat and die. Trust me on this I lived in central Australia without grid power (thus air-con) for a while and saw air temperatures up to 49.5 degrees C regularly, although never actually saw the 50. The good thing about going with the AMD r9 290 though is you can always invest in the water-cooling at a later date, either if you still feel you want it after trying the card or after you've saved up the money, and overclocked (on water this works well) its often as fast as the R9 290x is stock.

so you suggest me to get a 290 and buy gtx780 custom water cooling parts (haf XM case is good for it?).... Right now is autumn season we have about 15-20c, winter is about 0c here (extreme weathers) lol. Hot summer temps begin in July till September, so yes I will have time to think and collect parts. so thats it guys? you suggest me a 290 exclusively??! :) I am asking because in 3 hours I will give them a call for it. The only reference 290 they got at this point is by Gigabyte, is it good? I havent made any research about it at all.

The asus 780 is a great card.  I just bought one and it runs very cool.  Its winter here so the ambient temps are low but mine has never gone past 52C.  Thats benchmarking during gaming I can never even tell it is being used.  Plus it plays current games such as BF4 and Batman arkham origins well over 60 fps.

I am very, very tempted by the asus 780 with direct cu II cooler.  Are you playing at 1440p or 1080p, getting those frame rates?

The damn thing was available last week for $500; price has since bumped up to $520; frankly, either sound reasonable for what this card seems to deliver --
