New CPU or Motherboard?

Hey guys,

I am new to replacing parts and building pc's, so I made a "noob" mistake. I bought an AMD Phenom II x4 965 Black Edition. It is a 125w CPU. My motherboard is an N-Alvorix-RS880-uATX (Alvorix), which has a 95w TDP. My question is, should I keep the CPU and buy a new motherboard, or should I sell the CPU and buy one that is compatible with my motherboard? Trying to find not only the best, but also most economical solution. Thanks in advance for any help.

id probably go with a new am3+ mobo. that proc is still decent and if you got the new mobo you could always upgrade to something like a FX 6300 or 8350.

The 965 is still a competitive gaming CPU. I would upgrade the motherboard to a top end AM3+ motherboard. That will enable you to use some of AMDs top CPUs.

Can I run an AM3 CPU in an AM3+ motherboard?

Yes

Will I have to reinstall Windows? Is it as simple as unplugging everything, installing and plugging everything back in? Will I lose anything?

It's always advisable to reinstall Windows whenever you change major components. I would advise backing up any important documents on a USB key or spare HDD.
