New Camera?

My grandparents are giving me money for a camera. I'd like to get a decent one and i don't know much about them really. I think my most important thing i'd be looking for is like shutter speed. I want to able to take some decent action shots. I know theres a few photographers on here besides logan.

Budget: I have a little more but i think i'd like to keep it around or below $500

If you guys have suggestions that be great.

I was looking around and saw maybe the Nikon D5100 or maybe Canon EOS Rebel T3 but i'm not sure.

I have owned the Canon T3 for a while now, and can say that it is a great camera for the amateur/hobbyist photographer.   I looked at the specs for the D5100 and found that it is very similar to the T3.

Here is a side by side comparision.

The main differences between the two are that the D5100 is 16.2 megapixels, and shoots 1080, and the the T3 is 12.2 megapixels and shoots 720.  If You want to stay under $500, go with the Canon, but if you can spare a few more bucks get the Nikon.

D5100 because if anytime you wan't you go into video you will have the ability to film in 1080p also you might want a good set of lenses.

Whatever you do, don't get the lens that comes with the camera!  Do some research on lenses that are actually worth buying.  What are you primarly looking to shoot?  Action shots from what distance?

Well probably not too far away like maybe mostly of people at most only 5 meters or so away but i guess if I go on a trip somewhere with cool buildings or monuments it could be more like 50 meters but i don't feel like I need a super telescope lens.

I'm just kinda of a noob photographer so prolly not as picky.

Why i said action shots because is I like pictures a lot more that are not posed and sometimes i might wanna take pictures of moving things like maybe at a sports game or something.

Well would it be worth it to just buy the body now buy a lens later. Is the camera any good with just the body?

Or should I maybe buy this lens and then buy a better one later on?

I'm thinking I am going to go with the Nikon D5100.

Body doesn't work without a lens.  You could get the T3 body and a 50mm f/1.8 lens for under $500 total.  The 50mm is a good lens for portraiture, and it's really fast, especially compared to kit zoom lenses.  It won't be so good for sports shots, though, unless you're lucky enough to be positioned close to the action.  It's fine for taking pictures of buildings, eventually you might want something wider for that, though (like a 24mm or something).

The 50mm is a decent all-purpose, it puts you between telephoto sports lenses and wide-angle architecture/building/landscape lenses.  Also, I pretty strongly believe that using a prime lens rather than a zoom lens makes you a better photographer, lol.

Well, you cant really take pictures without a lens. The lenses that come with the cameras usually aren't the greatest quality, but they do work.   Buying the body now and doing some research into different lenses is great, but your camera will be a glorified paper weight until you get the lens you want.

Buy a cheap dlsr, I would rather get one used off cragislist or ebay (make sure you check the actuation number) than new if money is a tight. try looking for a nikon d70/80 used on ebay. They go for around 150 - 300 without lens. Im not all too sure on what kind of lens you would need though, but i would guess you could get a decent one for around 200 - 400

Your not gonna find a 5100 or a t2i NEW with kit lenses for 500. they all go for around 600

Well I talked to a guy I knew from school and he said he would sell me a used  T2I for 450 and so I think i'll also get the 50mm lens that littleviking recomended.

Thanks for your all your help.

I would try to buy a a refurbished/used/loyalty program t2i and a 50mm f/1.8 lens and you should be good for a while.
