New build (Productivity/Gaming) -Solved-

Hello everyone im looking into getting a workstation really soon and i was just wondering what everyone's thought was on the 5960x and x99 in general? As well as DDR4.

(I already own a 240gb ssd and a Titan Black SC that are going into this)

The build- http://pcpartpicker.com/user/kyleadavis94/saved/VW3NnQ

Side notes

I use Maya, 3ds max, Zbrush, premiere, UDK, and photoshop in my current workflow. A lot of modeling and rendering.

 MY FINAL BUILD, http://pcpartpicker.com/user/kyleadavis94/saved/FYRwrH

if 16gb is enough for you go for it ..

not sure if titans in sli will help with modeling but if it fits your budget why not ...  let me know how it goes ..

If you have the budget, go for it.  X99 is an incredibly powerful system.

It is a beauty but i have read some reports about two boards that have caught on fire. An Asus board and a MSI board but im not sure if that is something that i should worry about.

I was looking at the 32 gb kits and i will probably go with them for particle systems ect. The second Titan black is because of the xtra vram. I can render in vray with both cards or i can render with one card and use the other card to keep the modeling program stable.

Not that what you say wouldn't work but at this point I would look into garbing some old parts for a second computer with some renderfarm software to send jobs to

Do you like the titans? I've been using quadro for a while and im thinking of moving to them. I tried Firepro cards but there beyond horrible

You could build a dual xeon E5-2630 system for roughly the same price if you want ALL THE THREADS!!! they have a 6 core 12 threads base of 2.6 but turbo to 3.0Ghz and you could always set all the cores to turbo in the BIOS like I have with my E3-1230.

You could also ditch the Titans and get 6Gb GTX 780's, you would save a lot of money and probably wouldn't see too much of a performance dip.

EDIT: Sorry, just read the title properly, those Xeons probably wouldn't be great for Gaming.

Having a duel xeon build would be so beefy and awesome! But this i7 has stole my heart lol as well as the ddr4 compatability. I am ditching the second titan black though. (I already have 1)

You should not buy the second Titan ... Most rendering software does not support SLI... it will slow it down in fact.

I know everyone keeps talking about how some 3D software just loves cuda cores ... it is kind of misleading ... they love fast cuda cores ... more is not always a measure of better.  The old GTX 580 3GB cards where and still are faster for rendering than even a GTX 780ti.

Edit:

  1. Just saw the post above saying your not buying the second Titan ... +1  it would be a waste of $
  2. You should buy a PSU with lower wattage also. At the risk of sounding like a "fanboy"  ... I would recommend either Seasonic or  XFX or Corsair ... they are the most dependable on the market.( I have been hearing good things about the new EVGAs though) And nothing over 1000w 80+ Gold (or Platinum) Certified  (unless powering Quad SLI system or a large Raid array)
  3. You should buy three or more WD 2TB Black series hard drives and run them in Raid for redundancy / backup . Even if one of the drives fail ... you do not lose you work. WD Blues will work and are cheaper ... but Blacks have a better warranty.
  4. Get an SSD for the OS drive ... either a Samsung for a 2.5" or an OCZ PCIe SSD card for even better performance.

One more thing ... spend money on fans ... very long render sessions can get extremely "warm" ... good case ventilation is key.

Yes, GPU calculations in programs such as Iray are slowed by SLI but there is a very simple solution - turn it off when not gaming, turn it back on when you are.

The best setup for Iray Vray RT etc. would be a dual GPU setup, one for display and the other for calculations, especially if real time rendering is used.

Premiere would love the X99 platform over the previous gen. Photoshop works on just about anything really unless you're obsessively min-maxing with filters and plugins. Depending on your workload/multitasking a 32gb ram kit would be second in line after the CPU in terms of priority. If you're working deep in Premiere then a physical scratch disk aside from OS and storage is a must.

Thank you very much for the reply!

I have been thinking about that second card and decided to take it out :D And i will look into a different psu as well.

I updated the pc part picker and went ahead and threw in two Seagate 2tb drives (I have bad luck with WD)

and for an SSD i own a 250 gb SSD that has my windows 8.1 on it.

Finally last but not least i am planning on getting fans on my left over money.

Thank you for the suggestion, I am planning on upgrading to 32gb in the future.

That is why I originally had the idea for sli but decided for now one will be okay. If needed i will get a second one around the upcoming summer.

I have heard some mixed reviews about firepro's. I do enjoy the titans but i have never had my hands on a quadro either so I would do a ton of research if you are thinking about switching.
