I finally finished my first build .YAY!. the only problem i have run into is my system shows 8gb of ram installed but only 3.98 gb usable. i tried going into msconfig to allow all 8gb. but still says only 3.98gb usable. This is a fresh install of win7 64bit as well. any help would be greatly appreciated .

you have to disable max memory on startup option, in the msconfig.
- go to start typ: msconfig enter
- click on boot tab.
- click on advanced options.
- Then uncheck max memory (disable max memory)
- apply reboot.

thanks tried that still only have 3.98 usable. resource monitor shows 8192 mb installed , 4076mb total . it also says hardware reserved 4116 mb then the other 4067.
Could it be that is just cached and you are misinterpreting it?
You may just be misinterpreting.
In task manager I have:
Physical Memory (MB)
Total - 16325
Cached - 2927
Available - 13244
Free - 10595
Is that where you are taking the reading from? cause I can't remember what kind of readings I had on my old system with 8gig.
MMM also make sure you (if you have 4 dim slots) to skip a slot so dual channel is enabled.
I have 8 GB ram and in my task manager it says
total: 8130
cached: 5638
available: 5824
free: 223
It's detecting the full set. I'd just run with it.
It would be good to know what you have loading at startup. Like right now I have only got 1703 MB cached and 12243 MB.
I might have double the capacity than you but I don't think you're PC shouldn't be caching 5.6 GB if you haven't done much.
Other tweaks I must mention though I have disabled Hibernate and system restore so that could account for such low cache usage on my system since the private working set for those 2 components are non-operational.
How many processes do have running. And what is your AV?
I also should mention if you have and Nvidia GPU the streamer service is leaking memory for some users.
sorry ive been having some other issuse. so i bought another stick thinking maybe one was bad now it shows 12gb but still only 3.98gb usable. i did in fact install 64 bit windows 7 ultimate . ill post a picture later today as i am not home right now. showing how much memory is being hardware reserved. also cpuz shows the memory running in single channel but they are all installed correctly .
Hmmm, have you looked into the BIOS about "Memory Remapping"? This could be the problem with the 4gb but it will not solve the single channel problem. Does the ram run at stock speed?
