New build, first AMD

i'm planning to build a new pc when ZEN comes out. do any of you guys have some advice? Personally I have never build an AMD system.... do you guys have any tips? also i'm planning to do some 1440p gaming and some Vitrualbox work.

I was thinking about the 6/12 ZEN CPU and dual RX470

Also, is there any change with the Fedora PCI pass through thing i would be able to run games inside Boxes?

My budget is about 1800 euro and I only need the desktop, would that be enough?

I like to hear your thoughts :D

If you want/need to build immediately get the cheapest 1060 or the cheapest 470. Then upgrade to Vega when it comes out.

I don't know how things are going to be priced and official benchmarks are scarce, so giving recommendations about which part to grab just yet is still a bit of a shot in the dark, but I would think that 6/12 would be good for what you are wanting to do. Should be enough cores without going too far overboard (assuming that the 6/12 variant is available at launch). But for the GPU, I would really suggest you consider getting an R9 Fury instead of CF 470s. I'm not sure about the pricing over there, but at least in the US, the Fury can be had below $300, and performs about where CF 470s land, without the headache of CF. Avoiding multi-gpu set ups is always advisable.

Unfortunatly there isnt really that much to say about the Ryzen cpu´s yet.
We have seen a couple of AM4 motherboards.
But there isnt enough information known yet for me to recommend a decent board.
As soon as the Ryzen stuff goes mainstream, then there is more to say about it.

But with a €1800,- budget you should get there no problem.
Allthough prices of hardware in BE / NL are raising..

I am not sure what pricing is like in your area, but i would imagine that should be quite enough.

As for advice, i would avoid multiple GPUs. wait for vega if you're set on an amd GPU and want something higher end than the 480. If you have a gaming pc right now, maybe take the GPU out of it and use it until Vega comes out.

I would do this dis for boxes setup. Doesn't it need a sappered gpu?

I don't think that you do. But I don't know much about it all. Hopefully someone else can chime in with some more knowledge.

You could also consider dual booting, and having Windows 10 installed natively on a separate partition or drive. A bit inconvenient, but it would work very well.

Why dual 470? As others have mentioned you could wait for Vega (which is going to take a while), or simple grab an RX 480. (Read reviews first, you specifically mentioned 1440p gaming and while a RX 480 should be fine for 1080, I'm not sure about it's 1440p capabilities. Also, my 390 is noticeable faster than a friend's RX 480, but before getting a 390 you could think about purchasing a Fury (X), as others have mentioned)

That being said, I'm also going to buy Ryzen asap, because my mainboard's PCIe slot is bricked :-( and I'm looking forward to it. I'm also thinking about doing single PCIe passthrough, since apparently this is possible on AMD cards and kernel 4.10.

As for your 1800$: I think that should be enough, even for 1440p.

I'm guessing it's two 470s because passthrough? One 470 for linux and one for Windows?

How resistant are you against buyers remorse? Because I bought a RX460 on launch and I am annoyed that it dropped 25% in price after the 1050 launched.

Rx 470 have 2048 stream processors...
The big Vega is confirmed to have 4096, meaning exactly double. Vega is also said to release q2, meaning June. If you can - wait for Vega. If not - go forth...

A while ago I read on this forum that 4.10 supports single PCIe passthrough on AMD cards. So basically the host and guest are able to use the same GPU.

The performance per SP is supposedly better with Vega than Polaris. There is supposedly a lot that changed and is supposed to be a huge leap in performance. So I would guess more than twice the 470's performance. HBM2 is also something to take into consideration, though I don't think that would really affect performance all that much.

I think the problem with Vega is that it's propably going to take a while before it is purchasable.

Considering the demand vs supply of HBM2 at the moment, it might be sold out for a while.

exactly that, one for windows and one for linux. and if there is a native game dual for linux. i'm not really the one that straight buys it when it comes out. first i would like to see some benchmarks en tests. but if it drops overtime, that's not a problem.

I currently running a great system. only problem is the I5. I would keep that in mind.

thank you very much. i was looking for this.

Personally I am going to wait a year.
Kavari was 183 when introduced.
Year later Godavari came out at 129.
Zen is supposed to have the same life span as Bulldozer, I know I am alone in saying "I like Bulldozer"
6 months from now 400 will be enough for a killer Zen 1080 build:) IMHO

Plus additional time until it runs okay under Linux.
