New Australian anti piracy plan

What are your thoughts on a recent statement made by the Australian government, to block websites that give access to copyrighted content. Also allowing for international company's to apply to have a website blocked under the Abbot government's 2nd attempt at a web filter.

Could this harm Australia's digital future and set a bad precedent for other country's.

This is a link to the recent Gizmodo article on the subject. http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2014/12/government-outs-anti-piracy-plan-site-blocking-infringement-notices-and-industry-code-part-of-the-crackdown/#comment-3224370

Well, fighting piracy is good, but censorship isn't a sustainable solution; It's like pissing yourself to keep you warm.

Why are these kinds of articles popping out in frequent intervals from Australia? What's the reason piracy is such a huge problem over there? Doesn't people want to pay for legitimate content? Or is piracy considered to be such a serious offense?

It is because we get charged a fortune and the government caters for the big entertainment monopoly that is Foxtel.

Also our government likes to suck up to America and will do anything to please them.

No offence to anyone in the US.

None taken, most of us hate our government anyway. :P

This 'crackdown' on piracy has arisen as a result of the recently signed Free Trade Agreements (copyrighted content was a major deal-breaker for the signatories)

The Free Trade Agreement also allows foreign companies be they American, Chinese, or Japanese to sue our Aussie government, if at any time a trade amendment is not to their liking.

Good idea, MPAA be able to send URL to stassi to be blocked based on accusation of illegality without any trial or presumption of innocence. It's not like these systems have never been abused before either 'YouTube cough'.

I thought this was funny. I wonder if they will attempt to have Google blocked under the new laws here just to see if it fly's.

VPNs are going to start getting very popular in Australia in 2015 onwards.

I'm wondering what they are going to do after everybody just starts using a vpn and the original plan to prevent piracy stops being effective yet again.

Ban the entire traffic protocol for users on residential connections, and ban FTP as well, if you need that you can pay double the price for a 'commercial grade connection' for anything that isn't browsing youtube or facebook.

They will just say they have no choice, and besides everyone who uses it is...children..piracy...terrorists.. And why not, they are the government, they can do anything they want?

They will probably use it to take down the websites of people who speak out against them, that happens all the time on youtube. And then there are groups that use it to extort protection money from others, i.e. nintendo and let's players, which is very sad. Microsoft did it for people talking about their products. TotalBusciut got it for a game review where he was saying the game was buggy.

Thats why proper legal systems have a presumption of innocence ofcourse, but people find anything that involves actual thought hard to understand.

It is very dificult to distinguish openVPN from non vpn traphic but the data thropughput will cause issue. Best bet is the P2P internet protocol taking over the way we user the internet. My hope is a big company like Google takes it on and builds it into their browsers.

All the kiddies cant play COD then though. *Crys

How exactly do the brain trust over in Canberra plan on actually making this work? Because I'm pretty sure everyone else who's tried and failed would really like to know.

Maybe this free trade thing with China includes a web filter.
