Already have a good chunk of the parts:
14900k
Gigabyte OC 4090
Innocn 32 144mz monitor
Exos X22 HDD
Crucial T700 M.2 4TB & Samsung 990 Pro 4TB
Lian Li 216 Case
MSI Meg Ai1300p PSU
Now onto the parts I’m a little on the fence about and some questions:
Motherboard: Planning on the Gigabyte Master X. Good balance of features and I don’t need all of the bells and whistles because I’d probably never use them. I DO want to OC in the future once this system starts to age…is this a good board for OC’d a 14900k?
Also want the fastest RAM. I’ve read it’s impossible to achieve 8000MT/s on this board. Is close to upper 7000’s doable?
Leads to me to my next question on RAM…should I get 8000MT/s RAM so I at least have a chance to get as high as I can? On the other hand, plug and play would be ideal. What’s the fastest plug and play I can do with this board?
Should I fork out some more cash for a more premium board?
Also how much RAM should I aim for? Rig will be used for gaming in 4k and also as a 4k Plex server (only used by me and my wife so not a lot of traffic at all).
Next is the AIO CPU cooler:
Looking at the new Lian Li Galahad II LCD. My main question here…is it worth it going with the top model with the infinity fans? Or is it not worth it and just go with the stock fans?
Yeah, it should fit the bill for sure. No you don’t need a more expensive one. If anything, you could go with a lower board like the Aorus Pro and that would still be good enough for most of what you want to do.
As for OC, it’s allright I guess but OC these days is pretty meh. Games are pretty much not going to care about the clockspeed, important part is the number of cores basically, you won’t get much more FPS and AI agents are not going to be that much faster on a 14900k compared to say, an 8700G with 16 built in TOPS. You will see a slight improvement, like 15%-20% in some games, but what good will that do when the 17900k (yes I know it won’t be called that) will give a 60%-100% performance boost?
You do you though, so if OC makes you happy then OC the snot out of that machine. I wouldn’t, but I am not you
I mean, a 6000 MT/s stick is already good enough. DDR5 RAM is not set to bottleneck anytime soon. It’s just way too fast already so focus on low latency RAM (10 ns or less). If you can only go 100 mph regardless, does it matter if your car top speed is 150 mph or 160 mph? 32GB is plenty but 64GB just allows you to not care about RAM for a couple of years, and 96GB is even better. So, I would get something like this:
Stock fans should be just fine, but the build is plenty expensive already so why not just go with the infinity version? Also you can get the 360 trinity rad for $200, which is cheaper than the regular model so… Is it, really? I’d say, go for the Trinity, worrying about it is like worrying about whether or not to get the $5k leather seats on your $1.5M Ferrari… You’re already spending $6k on this build, of course it is worth it!
Let’s specc out your parts just to double check compatibility in PCPP:
Yeah, looking good except your storage. Keep the 5.0 drive as your boot drive, throw out the 22 TB and Samsung drives, and get a couple of these. If you think $869 for one drive is expensive, remember you are already paying close to $1k for the HDD and spare 4TB drive. Why not just the piece of mind with 16GB of full SSD storage?
HDDs have no place in a modern desktop or workstation build, period.
