Ok so the laptop i am on is a school laptop, so when i receive the new one it will be the same model. Im running Win 7.
This things screen is going to die soon, and i am going to need get all my data to the new computer.
Could i just switch HDDs? It's the exact same parts, same everything. If not how can i transfer my data.
Thanks.
If your replacement is the same model, then yes you can just switch the HDD's. Only thing is that the Windows license sticker on your laptop wont be the same key as whats actually installed, but most the time that's not an issue.
if it is the same laptop you can just swap HDD if it doesn't work clone the drive with clonezilla
Ok yeah the laptop is this
And i would be getting another one.
So to clone the drive i would probably need a Sata3 to USB right?
BTW i know this laptop sucks.
Since its the same laptop just switch the HDD's, much easier than cloning. and how dare you say a Latitude sucks >:(
lol :P
Ok i will try that first.
Oh and have you tried gaming on this thing? Halo CE is at med settings at 30 fps.
It's like being on a console, but with only 80 gigs of storage. I no like dell. It's great during the winter however, very warm when playing portal.
Lol
Well, yeah, laptops get very warm since they don't have much room for airflow. Also, have you tried dusting it?
Or perhaps it needs a new application of thermal compound. MY brother in law's laptop used to idle at 60 and load at 77.
I applied new thermal paste to his 8 year old laptop and its idles at 25 and barely hits 48 to 52 now.
Well, I did clean the fan but i dont think the school would even want me doing that.
(there was something stuck in there so i had to.) I would if it was my laptop, but it's not so....
I am going to switch out the HDDs because they would probably wipe them anyways so no harm no foul.
If you do swap the drive, remember to boot in safe mode the first few times, this lets windows recognize the hardware, and would give you a better chance to have it working.
Ok Good to know, thanks.
I will let you all know how it goes when the new one arrives.
Ok they sent me a different laptop. has an i3. fuck fuck fuck!
Help! what to do? Sata3 to usb? switch them and pray? I NEED HELP!!! PANIC!!.
.................
OK, calm.
any suggestions?
just go ahead and try to switch the drives.
Wouldn't that be bad
They have different internals
windows should be fine. just need to update drivers
Should I delete the drivers I have?
Why not get a new screen for it? I did that with a Dell laptop not too long ago, set me back $60 for a replacement screen
no. just swap the drives and install the drivers.
It's not mine and it's not just the screen
Have you done this before? How often does it work? Again it's not technically mine
what is the size of the new drive?
