I just recently bought a 2005 honda accord and the stock speakers actually sound decent enough to keep for now. But i want a subwoofer to make it nice for me and my friends. i have no clue what to buy other than an amp and the subwoofer itself but i have no clue what to buy. my budget is around $200. any help is appreciated.
You might need to upgrade your factory receiver. I don't know a whole lot about car audio, but I don't think you can get decent bass in your car for just 200 bucks. That sounds like the price of a low-mid tier subwoofer alone, without the other two components that are needed to get some bass up and running in your car.
not quite enough for me.
not from the prices ive seen but i guess i just need to learn more.
At that price range you're gonna be rockin some Pyle equipment...not terrible but definitely not great. ("Pyle of shit" is most call it lol)
That is why I linked you to Crutchfield.
There is no way anyone can pick audio equipment for you.
Only you know how much you are willing to spend to get good enough sound.
My technique is to go to a few car stereo shops, let them quote outrageous prices, then DO IT MY OWN SELF!
While I definitely approve of DIY, if he really doesnt know what hes doing then I would recommend against running his own hot wire or installing the receiver.
Well it depends a bit on what car model you have mainaly.
I see that you have a Honda accord from 2005,
But is it a tourer, hatchback, sedan?
But basicly you could look for a JBL sub + amp combo.
You can often find that for fairly cheap, and they sound very good.
if your just getting one sub, you can get a mono amp, the wireing for it, and a single 12 inch sub+box. that will shake the shit out of a car. if you want it to.
at that price range, you can get a sony or kicker comp sub and just match the rms power with an amp. make sure you pay attention to the ohm rating for the amp because they like to advertise giant numbers and confuse people.
I LOVE http://www.sonicelectronix.com for car audio equipment btw.
Look at getting a decent brand 2 channel amplifier that can drive a bridged load (combines the 2 channels into a single one for driving subwoofers) and has a built in filter. No point driving anything beyond 120Hz into a subwoofer.
You could also get away with a 10inch sub if space is a premium.
I used Alpine gear in the past and found them to be excellent.
Probably out of the price range but I was running 2x 12" alpine type R's off of a Pioneer 4 channel 1200w D class amp, pretty much made me need to get the windscreen and rear window resealed every few months in my 2003 HSV Clubsport. It's all been stripped now since I'm converting it to go racing in.
I had a single 12" type R in my VS for years. Had a beefy alpine 400W 4 channel amp running the sub of 2 channels bridged and the other 2 channels driving my front splits. It used to rock pretty hard. Now the sub box just sits in my shed gathering dust since I sold the car.
This place is pretty good for DIY projects. I bought from them and now I get their dangerous catalogs forever. I have to throw them away because I am so temped to buy new stuff.

I am poor and cheap. I believe in good speakers but inexpensive everything else. I have a 10" Sony sub with a crappy amp in a home made box. The whole thing cost less than $100. I have expensive JL Audio speakers and a Sony 4x75W amp I got at Walmart. I had to take my whole car interior apart and it took three days to build. My local shop wanted $2000 for what I built with $800. I only bought the speaker from...
SOUNDS INCREDIBLE!
I used to be the same way. I built all of my own car subwoofers, installed systems into 4 different cars, built my own kick panels and mounted split woofer/tweeter speaker setups. I designed and built my own home bookshelf speakers and a set of hi-fi speakers, all using quality drivers and then making the boxes myself. It was my hobby. Sadly work, wife and kids has ended it all for now but I looking forward to the day when my kids ask for their own music setups. Till then its building PCs.
correction: to piss off the neighbors and rattle the license plate lol
200 all in? Look on craigslist. You can usually find good deals there. Like most things, this equipment depreciates incredibly quickly. Have you done much of this stuff before? Running the power wire is by far the most important thing. I spent a few years in that industry, car fires are real, and they happen a lot because of inexperience. Its not a difficult job but take your time and protect that wire everywhere you can.
i suppose that topic starter allready has boaght a subwoofer 6 months later.
So i gonne lock this one.
