Need recommendations on new computer parts for gtx

I'm planning on upgrading from my old q6600 and ddr2 motherboard to a 2500K (or should i choose something else?).

So basically I need a motherboard that runs that chip and some ram to go with it. Also if anyone knows any good deals in 850w+ power supplies, because I may want to go sli in the future.

Thanks.

-Tom

Definitely go for the i5 2500K, unless of course you'd rather get the 2600K, but I guess since you're looking at the 2500K it's either just not in the budget or you don't need the extra processing power.

If I were doing a build right now, I'd get this motherboard:

And for the ram it depends on how much you want and how much you want to spend. Whatever you get though, make sure it's 1.5 volts. I'd personally recommend these (and I'd even buy two kits if you wanted 8GB):

As for power supplies, this is probably the best value on Newegg:

Unless you want to go modular:

Awesome choices man thanks! I do plan on getting 8Gb of ram so is that memory still the best deal if I buy two?

Also quick question, does a sata 3gb/s HDD work with a 6gb/s mobo?

Also also, should I instead wait a month or two to buy, is anything coming out soon that would be better or cause a price drop?

Also also also, I need a sweet cpu air cooler that doesn't break the bank.

Well for 8GB, you could also get one of these kits, but the timings are higher:

3Gb/s hard drives will work with a 6Gb/s motherboard. They are backwards compatible, and even SATA III hard drives won't come close to maxing out the bandwidth on a SATA II port.

Well there's bulldozer from AMD which is supposed to come out in October, and it's rumored that Nvidia is going to be coming out with new GPUs at the end of the year. I personally wouldn't wait though.

What about this for a cpu cooler? It's about $25 cheaper than a Noctua NH-D14, and it performs almost as well. It's one of the best air coolers on the market right now:

That thing looks sweet. Will that power supply juice two gtx 570's?

All the power supplies I listed should be able to run two 570s fine. I'd stay away from that Antec now that I look at it though, because it has multiple rails and only about 22-25 amps on each of them.

You made my life a lot easier, thank you so much!

:D

Lol, no problem. Let us know what you end up getting and post some pictures if you can. :D

for a CPU cooler I'd advise a Hyper 212+ I have one and it cools like a boss, I have phenom II X4 with +1.5v and it has never sweated 45C

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103065

and its only like $30

The Hyper 212+ is overrated, imo. Everyone always claims it has mythical cooling powers, but in every benchmark I've ever seen it lags behind all the high performance coolers.

Just found out about a new motherboard that's definitely worth taking a look at. It has a couple of PCI-express 3.0 ports on it, so it should be pretty future proof.

MSI Z68A-GD65

Hmm... the reviews for that motherboard aren't perfect, and the way I see it, why not get a motherboard with an amazing rating. Are there any other pci 3.0 motherboard on the market better the MSI Z68-GD65?

I am making my purchases tomorrow.

:P

EDIT: Holy shit $700!

Can anyone do some trimming to get it in the $500-600 range?

I changed the motherboard back to your first choice and chosen this ram instead. It is still $637, is there anyway to get it cheaper?

Give me your budget and your needs.

How much are you willing to spend, and what are you going to be running in your system? You might not need an 850 watt psu.

this mobo would work just as good and save you $30 (definately not as aesthetically pleasing tho)

PSU thats $50 cheaper (this is the PSU I have, still workin fine after over a year of abuse)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182072

also, It wont save you any money, but I would much rather have 6GB of fast RAM than 8GB of slow RAM. just sayin how often you think you'll use 8GB? you know?

$500-600 would be awesome.

I could work with 6Gb of memory(recommendations?). I want the 850w because I might want to run two GTX 570's in the future. I also want a modular power supply.

In the reviews for my motherboard they say that the cpu is close to ram, meaning not much room for the cpu cooler. The cpu cooler I picked out seems pretty large. Will it fit?

Never mind, I went for it and purchased.

XD

I chose everything from the picture above except I picked the first motherboard Vortex recommended.

Will update once they arrive and take photos.

Thanks guys!

Nice! Can't wait to see the pictures. Don't worry about the V6GT covering up the ram. It should be fine. It only covers up one ram slot on most motherboards, and if you need to replace one of the ram modules you can just clip off one of the fans and there will be plenty of room to work with.

Be sure to post your rig in the "post your rig" thread when it's done!
