Need help

Can I take my hard drive out of my pc and put it in another then install a program on the hard drive then use the program on my pc? I am only doing this as I have got Left 4 Dead today and my DVD drive is at a shop being repaired, so I am going to take my hard drive out my pc and put it in a different pc in my house with a DVD drive to install it on my hard drive so i can play it, will this work or will I just have to wait for my DVD drive?

i have a simpler solution as long as you have steam installed on the computer you want L4D on you can download it on the computer through steam for free as its logged uner your account name you can install the game on anycomputer logged under your account

it is a retail version not a steam version

if you set up the hard drive as a slave, theoretically it should work. but i doubt it. i would just wait if i were you. or turn the disk into an iso and put it on a flash drive and install it like that

If i remove the hard drive from the computer with the dvd drive and replace it with mine would it work then?

no it would not, you wouldn't be able to boot into windows

how i have windows installed on the hard drive i want l4d on?

but the redgistries and drivers wont work with the motherboard. you would either have to set it up as a slave and hope it works, and i think it might, or just take out your dvd drive and put it in the other computer

I tired taking the drive and putting it in mine but it didnt work, when i tried to boot it would just shut down and it was the drive because as soon as I unplugged it it would work fine.

looks like i will just have to wait a few more weeks then...(begins to cry)

L4D was created by valve which means it IS a steam game, I downloaded the game and passed it to 4 of my mates simply by copying the game files and pasting it into their steam account files. here is what you do,

1.take out the drive on your pc that has your halflife/steam folder in it

2.put in into your other comp, install the game (it will automatically be in your steam folder)

3.remove the HD into the orignal pc and it will work.

thats the beauty of steam, you only need your accout activated with the game for it to work on any HD on any PC. no install needed, just the game files. hope this helps/

If your HD with steam has windows installed on it just take out the HD in the other pc when you do this... else your system prolly wont boot :O

ok thanks, is there anything that can go wrong with doing this like file loss or hdd damage from swapping it over?

anybody know the answer to my last post?

yes u can do it take the ahrdrive out put it in another computer with a dvd drive and install it into it u wont
