Need help to build a workstation

Hello awesome people. What's up?

I want to build a new computer for myelf. I am play poker on it and during a typical session I use a lot of programs, a lot of them are java, chrome with 3-4 tabs, a bunch of other programs that are made so stupid and eat insane amount of CPU power. I currently have a laptop+2 1080 monitors connected to it and I want to upgrade cuz I have been running into some trouble.

The laptop spects are:

i7 4702MQ 2.2ghz up to 3.2ghz

16gb ram

gtx 760M

256gb samsung ssd 840 basic

1tb hard drive.

I bought this laptop to have my workstation with me where ever I go but it seems that I'm not going to be traveling anytime soon so I figured that I might as well get a desktop pc.

To make things easier around here just include some extra info so we can tailor you better.

  • Budget. How much are you willing to spend?
  • I am willing to spend as much as needed, I am not a hardware enthusiast though and don't want to pay more if it's not needed.
  • Where do you live (what country),  and what currency do you use?
  • ROmania : RON/USD/EUR
  •   -Is there a retailer you prefer?
  • NO
  • Do you need or already have peripherals? (this can add to costs)
  • yes I have everything
  • What will you be using your future computer for? Gaming? Rendering? Mix of both? Or is this a home media PC?
  • Multiple stuff
  • Do you overclock or want to get into overclocking?
  • NO, I want to have something extremely stable.
  • Do you plan on going for custom watercooling now, or in the future?
  • NO
  • OS. Do you need a new one?
  • NO

If you Render or Edit things-

  • What application do you use to render? (very important)
  • Camtasia Studio

  • Do you render movies or photoshop pictures
  • I record my screen and render videos very frequently.

I've been watching a lot of teksyndicate's vids on youtube also some from linustechtips and from what I understand I need some processor like xeon with a lot of cores+ hyperthreading to be very stable and also to have a lot power to manage all of these programs that I will be using all at once.

I will be needing an SSD with minimum 250 gb - the faster the better. I bought a samsung 840 basic for my laptop because that one was in top of the benchmarks at the time and also not insanely expensive.

I also want to know if there is possible to get 2 internet connections at once. I have seen motherboards with 2 Ethernet slots and I am very curious about them. A lot of times my internet just crashes and I had multiple times where that costed me ~400$-500$  just because I couldn't get back online. I will get 2 internet cables from 2 different providers and plug it in there to switch fast between them whenever one of them crashes.

As for video card I do play some games like dota2 and from time to time skyrim or some other cool shit but I'm not that crazy about games. Some people tell me that it;s better for me to get a AMD card right now because it renders much much faster and I believe that because I had a 7770 before and it was faster than my current 760M. The only problem is - how stable these amd cards are, I don't want my computer to crash or anything when I start rendering a video and start a session.

Overall:  It is very important for me that this system will be very stable and very hard to stop it from what it's doing :D.

thanks a lot in advance

bit of a limited selection on the dutch version of pcpartpicker...

http://de.pcpartpicker.com/p/3ekln

... but that should do well... note: couldn't find a Haswell Xeon (wanted the 1240 v3) on the site, and the GPU is a bit older of a model... but this build should perform excellently for what you do without getting into skyrocketing GPU prices...

any other suggestions?

I would for the following

  • AMD FX 8350 8 core CPU
  • AMD R9 270 or if you want to spend more get a R9 280x
  • Asus M5a99fx Pro R2.0 motherboard
  • 16 GB of RAM.  Either Corsair, G.skill, Kingston, Mushking, A-data whatever is the cheapest.
  • An SSD, Kingston SSD Now V300 or Adate SX900 or Samsung 840 pro
  • An HDD, western digital or seagate.  I recommend at least one terabyte or more.
  • Reliable 650W+ powersupply from either Corsair, XFX, Seasonic,
  • Case is very subjective,  Don't get something all plastic with only one fan, but don't get a full aluminum tower.  You can cooler master haf 912, Nzxt source 210, Nzxt phantom, Corsair 200r, corsair C70, Fractal design arc midi, define R4.
  • Solid CPU cooler like the cooler master hyper 212 evo

I obviously tried to place a greater emphasis on screen capture and rendering than gaming by throwing in a beefy CPU and RAM as opposed to a good graphics card.  You can also throw in a capture card too.  Let me know what you think.

BTW, you may want to change out the GPU if you're planning to game!  If you're just rendering, then that card will work quite nicely.
