have an AI/ML workstation and no UPS I can find seems to my machine with such high transient power draw, I tried a Cyberpower or2200pfcrt2u and an Eaton 5PX1500IRT with just 2 of the A800s running (was debating taking a GPU out) and it just cant keep up. Any recommendations on a UPS that can support to 2000-2400W on a budget (<1000$)?
Nope. For those kinds of loads, you’re really looking at a UPS in terms of time-to-safely-shutdown instead of time-to-continue-as-before. Unless of course, you have a fully blown gen-set in your back garden and the telemetry to fire it up instantly when the power goes out. Just like a data centre would
At least in theory you should be able to utilise the battery in your EV to keep stuff running during a blackout. Until you can use the car no more when the battery is dead
Rather than trying to find a big enough UPS, have you considered power limiting those GPUs so that you can have a more sane power consumption that a regular UPS can handle?
I am perfectly OK with time to safely shut down as I am only expecting a best a few minutes of run time if even that. In my area the power can shut off a half a second sometimes and it is frustrating me to no end…
You’ll also want an Online Double Conversion UPS to ensure that when power is interrupted it doesn’t shut anything down. I’ve had a few Line-Interactive units that have caused systems to reboot during a power hiccup. Doesn’t sound like that would be acceptable to you.
Not that I’m an expert here. But you’ll want to look into online double conversion vs line-interactive, OP.
double online ups as suggested is the way to go but have in mind they make a load of noise and the price is higher than normal. But in that range you can also buy one and then add battery packs to it to have more running time on batteries. I have one 4KVA and I have option for battery pack but it does makes noise and needs a cool room to be in.
It’s mostly a matter of verifying the switching time is low enough for your devices to not poweroff.
I have a 2kVA line-interactive one that is able to handle my 2x3090 setup without issues for hours.
It depends if you have dirty ac in, eg constantly experiencing surges, power fluctuations, voltage variations, and frequency variations.
If you don’t have the above frequently and is not something mission critical then line-interactive is fine as well.
I got the double online on a good deal and my area had issues until they replaced the nearby ac station.
Thanks I appreciate the chime-ins with more specifics. I’ve no expert on power except for telling people their new rack is gonna require 120kW lol
