So i have recently been looking into building a pc for hosting a server on about 6gbs of ram, so i'd figure i'll buy 8gbs incase i need to run other programs, i have some sort of idea, right now i'm in the 300-400 price range, doesn't need to be anything special, just something that can host a server, that runs well. As for my internet, i'm upgrading...
If this is just for website hosting then I would recommned a 2nd hand HP proliant server can be low spec depending on what you are hosting. We run a few sites running apache, PHP, Mysql, etc with Ubuntu Server edition and it only has 2GB and it has never gone about 512mb on memory being used! The thing just sits there doing nothing the whole time but is like a rock with fully hardware redundency at server class level all for £60.00!!!
(This will use a lot of power and is going to be loud)
What kind of server is it for? apache, mysql, ftp, mail, applications, sip, AD, ...? and what will be the load?
If it's not going to have much load, sometimes even something as small as a Rasperry Pi might make a good server...
Another option depending on needs could be a Synlogy NAS box
