I'd probably recommend spending a bit extra on better cpu cooling, i just choose to the best one to fit ur budget. Hope this helps

e8400 dual core, it almost always beats the q6600 in games

4870

4 or 8gbs of fast ddr2. depending on if u go 32 or 64 bit

500gb 7200 harddrive

then get a power supply capable of powering 3 gpu's

edit-21DD23's first setup is really good but id go with an x38 or 48 then maby wait on the second graphics card, they will drop in price.

i think 8gb is a waste whos gonna use that much. just get like 4gb 1066 ddr2 ram

almost no one will use 8gbs but if he gets a 64bt os he might as well lol. i just see going with the 64bt os and not as a waste

but ya as i mentioned in another post the x38 or 48s when in crossfire both run 16x were as the p45 chipsets run 8x

asus has some nice x38 based boards that use ddr2.

4 gig is fine on vista 64 bit.

never had issuies :)

this is what i came up with

right nows not the greatest time to go with nvidia (it might change) but if that is your preference your set up is for the most part pretty good

are you set on these things, id consider

i have the q6600 and like it but i was disappointed to find out the e8400 beats it in games, but u know newer games will start taking advantage of quad cores.

also what do you think of going with 1066mhz memory, its not that much more

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231184

well really 1066mhz at 55515 compared to 800mhz @44412 isnt going to be much of a difference

i don't see the point in going with the e8400...gaming isn't the only thing people do on computers and if it is better in games now its not but much and it won't be that way for long ..personally i'd probably spend the extra 100 bucks and go for the q9450..best way to future proof without getting a processor over 1k

the q9450 is around 330 dollars were as the e8400 is like 170, its piratically twice as expensive. the 9450 is the processor id get if i were trying to set up a future proofed system but this thread was about a budget gaming system. price to performance wise the e8400 is one of the best cpus on the market, and if your willing and capable of overclocking so is the q6600.
