I wasn't really sure where I should post this in the forum so I just listed it under code. Okay, so I began working on a project in the Unreal Engine earlier this year. (for non-commercial use of course) I just became aware that Crytek released the CryEngine 3 SDK for non-commercial projects as well. So I have decided to switch my project over to the CryEngine 3. I had hardly began the project in the Unreal Engine because I had to learn how to use it properly and it was taking forever, but I already have a good ground on the CryEngine because I have used the CryEngine 2 for years.
Anyways....I was wondering what program you guys think I should use to design character models etc. I have thought about this before but I can never decide on what program to use.
You should defiantly use Autodesk’s Maya or 3DS MAX. Maya is by far the best (in my opinion) though can be quite complex. There are plenty of online tutorials to teach you as well. Plus if you're a student you get it free also.
Just think of the facts. 50% of the gaming industry use Maya and the other 50% 3DS MAX. But 99.9% of the animation industry use Maya. Pixar the lot.
I'm sure you've hit other forums and people have been saying Cinema 4D and Blender but don't listen to them. No school, college or University will ever teach them because they just don’t quite have the same functionality.
Sounds like you have a mamoth task ahead of you though. Hope you know what you're getting you self into. lolz.
I was thinking more towards Maya...I have used blender, I don't like it.
Yes the task is going to be quite the undertaking. I had started the project my sophomore year of high school with some concept art and designs but my partner and I couldn't work together so we cancelled the project and I brought it back earlier this year.
I sterted a game in Cryengine3, the Editor is not the most stable application arround. I lost lots of work due to crashes, mostly it runs out of memory, and then you can't save or do anything anymore. Excpet for that issue, it is a great tool.
For now that game is still vaporware, but i hope that someone will help me, because i suck at 3d modelling, and i am not an expert in using blender or Maya .
Using Maya cab be tough be begin with. But if you've been using blender you'll have some basic understanding of 3D modelling. If you go to learning-maya. com they have everything you'll need. I had Introducing Maya book any edition will do. Ide go for what ever Maya you have Obvs lol. Easily torrented in PDF if that's your thing. Good luck.
