I've got an i7 920 and it's currently overheating. It was working normally but like 3 weeks ago it started overheating. I took out the thing, cleaned it, removed the thermal compound and replaced it with new one... problem gone. But now it's doing the same thing again and doing the same process didn't work. At least I managed to make the pc work for regular windows stuff but as soon as I try to play any game, the cpu starts overheating. I think the cpu fan (it's the original one, just in case) no longer makes good contact with the cpu. I'd like to hear some recomendations for cpu fans before buying a new one. I'm considering one of these water-cooled heat sinks that just started coming out. Something like this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835181010
I just read about an antec ( I think) one that got positive reviews but I can't remmember the name or find the thing in newegg again. I'd like some help choosing a new heat sink. Thanks in advance.
Get Noctua or ThermalRight. Best damn CPU cooling out there!
double check its mounted correctly and that the fan is actually spinning you would be suprised how long it will run wioht the fan not spinning
Stock Intel coolers suck so much, make sure its REALLY tightened down at all four corners(look at the back of the motherboard to see)
a cooler master 212 plus keeps mine cool, but if your overclocking an i7 you might want something like noctula for something crazy
amazon link- http://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-Hyper-Sleeve-RR-B10-212P-G1/dp/B002G1YPH0/ref=sr_1_10?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1306284056&sr=1-10
newegg- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103065&cm_re=212_cpu_cooler-_-35-103-065-_-Product
and the thermal paste is pretty good that comes with it, as good as some AS5

This is precisely what I kept checking, they're all all the way in, and the fan is moving nicely. But still I don't think it is making good contact with the cpu. I prefer the ones that work with a base and some screws. Thanks for the suggestions, I'm checking them out. But are the water coolers any good?

water cooling in genreal is good for you're computers tempatures but if you dont feel comfortable doing a full loop you can lawasy get one of the cosair all in ones jsut for you're cpu i think they run around 50$ they work fairly well and are simple to install
I have the Corsair H60 for little over two weeks and it is working far better than the crappy stock cooler. I am running the Intel core i7 930 at 2.8GHz (stock) and I am getting temperatures around 26c-28c wile idling and browsing the web. When gaming, I am getting around the mid 30s to low 40s. I got my H60 from Newegg for $70 plus a $15 MIR. It may be a little expensive for a CPU cooler, but it is worth the purchase.
There are cpu coolers out there that are better than the closed loop water coolers. The ones that first come to mind are the:
Noctua NH-D14
Thermalright Silver Arrow
Cooler Master V6GT
Thermaltake Frio
The new Corsair H100 looks ballin if you got the space for it:
I prefer these closed loops over a HUGEALICIOUSFREAKINGBLOCKOFMETALINMYCASE aircoolers.. : 3

I'm really excited for that one^^^
I really want to see some benchmarks when it comes out.

I have that same cooler on my ph2 x2 555 @ 4.0ghz and never get over 44c its at 28c/82f :)
I do have my air conditioner on.
megahalems and two delta's with a fan controller for air. for water go with H100 like green said!
cooling performance, accoustics, price, ease of assembly, aesthetics

The megahalems cool like a champ! paired with two delta's is loud but a fan controller will calm it down. It's a little spendy for no fan:/ its got one of the best bolt thru kits ever and its sexy(: haha so go buy yourself a megahalems!
I'd go for a heatsink... not them "3-in-1" mini LQ-kit from Corsair. I had one once. It was NorthQ though, not Corsair. But same partnership with Asetek Cooling. I think was leaking, cause you could hear small air bubbles in the circuit. And even @ 3.4 GHz - 1.17v, my i7 hit 80*C after 1 hour Prime95. Now I have a ThermalRight Venomous X with two Noctua fans in push/pull config... 4.1 GHz - 1.275v = 76*C after 4 hours of Prime95.
FYI, I did NOT have push/pull config on the NorthQ LQ kit, since the product was lacking following screws in the package... So it had a single Noctua fan @ 1200RPM.

I dunno if you can read the temps, but here is m proof!

I know Asetek has improved since this failure, and Corsair make better products than NorthQ... but I still don't trust them...
My coolit eco alc does the job pretty nicely, (not atm, shitload of dust on it and hos as hell in my room) but I think I'll get the H100 or something later on anyways.
BTW Ruffe; I like your northbridge heatsink : 3

Heh yeah! But my mobo is bigger than your! :P

The Megahalems is completely outdated and simply does not perform well at all with newer processors.

I'm getting the H50 I think. When is this one coming out? I think I could remove the big fan on top of my Haf 920 to place that one but I don't really like that idea too much. When it the H100 supposed to come out and how much should it cost? Also, I'm now looking for a PSU since I might as well buy both at once. Any suggestion for one? I'd like a 850W to 1,000W and I'm buying from new egg btw. I'd like it to have more than one 12v rail. Still researching here. Thanks for all the advice, it's been helpful. I'm also checking out the air heat sinks that have been suggested but the water cooler ones really pique my interest. Thanks.
Edit: No ThermalTake PSU's. The one that burned out was from that brand and their SATA cables break easily and they won't send them here.
