well, the good news is that low response time that is desirable in games is available in the cheapest panels for LCD montiors.Don't get a monitor that advertises above 2ms response time.
For that price range, the question is 24" monitor with 144hz refresh rate or 27" with 60hz refresh rate. If you are the kind of guy that will turn game settings to min so you can play them at 200fps, get the 144hz 24". If you are the kind of guy that rather set the games' graphics to max and play at 30fps, get the 27" with 60hz. Asus and BenQ are the obvious brands to look at. I guess also whats important is just how much space you have on your desk and if you are used to a particular size. Like if you're used to 24", it might just be better to stick with that size even if you don't think you'll need the 144hz.
