Good Mornig,
I'm new to the forums so thank you for letting me be here.
I am looking a building NAS that will double as a rendering machine. I was thinking of parting together a dual X5550 or X5520 system in a 4U chassis that can accommodate 120mm fans. I have found several inexpensive Dell Poweredge R410's on the bay, but the turn off to those is the 2U form factor and the fan noise. Would it be worth parting together a system or just dealing with the fan noise?
Either way, the it would be running FreeNAS with a VM of Windows something to render videos.
Thoughts?

I would go dual X5660 instead of x5550 or x5520, since those older quads really are lacking in ipc.
Throw a couple of these:
in one of these:
And then ram is cheap:
You could put all of that in a rosewill 4u chassis:
Then choose your liking of cpu coolers, powersupply, and drives.

The ATX motherboard is a must. The 410s will be having some non-standard mounting holes (probably).

not to mention Dell Poweredge R410 have loud psu's. (like 50dBa) you wouldn't be able to get rid of them since they use custom connector.

Why not something like an HP Z800/Z600/Dell T5500/Lenovo D20? They can all be used as NAS and render machines, and will be much quieter. You're going to build a used system anyway, so I don't see the issue.
I have the mobo on order. I tend to like EVGA PSU's. Should i find one with two CPU power plugs or can i split off of PSU plug giving there is enough wattage in the PSU?
Get one powersupply with two cpu power connectors. If a psu is capable of supporting two cpus, it usually will have two plugs. I used an Evga P series for my brothers dual xeon x5670 build.
