My Windows 10 Tech Preview impressions

I tried posting this into the blog section but it's not working so I am posting it here

When I saw the images of Windows 10 bring back the start menu, my mouth dropped and I was speechless so I thought why not try it out. I installed it into a virtual machine using Oracle VirtualBox using the basic Windows 8.1 settings and it booted up no problemo.

For the booting process, it brings you right to the desktop and this is really awesome to see that they are focusing on the desktop again. A+ in my book right there.

Logan and his epic beardyness will be disappointed with the Control Panel as it is the same "Modern" app

A new thing MS added that I am not sure if it was in 8/8.1 is this ... button next to the application icon on the top left corner of the application that brings out a list that you can click on

The Search button now allows for internet searches along with files on your computer but it does not open IE. Instead it opens a "Search" application.

The Taskbar is now translucent. I am not sure if 8/8.1 has it but its pretty neat to have that.

Task View is pretty cool but I really don't see myself using this feature. Nice to see that but it somewhat screams Linux feature. You can also add and remove desktops with a click. The icons are merged with each other instead of acting as a second monitor.

I really enjoy the new Start menu. It is exactly what I was asking for from MS, a Start menu that mimics 7 but with live tiles.

The File Explorer layout is really clean. They added two buttons that allows you to view the properties of a file and to create a new folder at the upper left hand corner of the window.

Wendell will be one happy man as they bringing back Previous Versions and it is a tab that you can click on. It is also enabled by default i think.

Here is a view of what Task View looks like in action and they are bringing back Aero Peek but with a twist of Windows 8/8.1 visual style.

Each "Modern" application is finally sizable and you can minimize it but I'm sure you guys already saw this.

If you guys want to see anything else. Just let me know :D

I noticed that too about the stupid PC Settings app being included in the start menu instead of the Control Panel, and send them feedback about it. I noticed some other comments about the same thing. At least you can still get to the control panel by right-clicking the start button.

IMO they should gut the PC Settings outright. It looks really dumb.

That makes alot more sense then the two tools being separate. I put that in the Feedback

What's the performance like so far just navigating around and opening programs? Snappy?

I was running it on a VM so I cannot really give a performance view but booting it on my RAID 0 Hybrids are very very quick. There is very noticeable mouse lag but this is just a WIP.

I could not find the scheduled task to actually do the shadow copies automatically. But at least the tab is there!

Guess we'll know in a few days if copies show up lol. or If I can enable it

Seems like a step forward.

Has there been any updates to DX?

Is it still shoving OneDrive and Bing in the user's face?

Is it still locked to secure boot?

Still DOS with a GUI?

I thought you might get a good kick out of that since you always ranted about shadowcopy and how it saved your butt a couple of times.

Has there been any updates to DX? Maybe. Ill look right now (Just checked and it still uses DX 11 based on Dxdiag but im assuming that DX12 will come with the full release of 10.)

Is it still shoving OneDrive and Bing in the user's face? Yes and yes for the internet searches

Is it still locked to secure boot? I think so but that was taken from a virtual machine

lol i dont know

I HAVE FOUND HOW TO ENABLE SHADOW COPY!!!!!!!!!!

Start>type services.msc in the search>find Volume Shadow Copy

It is disabled by default so you need to enable it.

I hope not for the last one. I don't toy with them often (right now), but I've got several different OS' on this thing and don't need one screwing the others up.

Going solely by what I've read/seen, it actually looks like they took some of those "Power Toys" from w95 and modernized them. :-p

You know, I never played with them but I heard of the power toys.
