My sniffing around for a 75w gpu, and a wifi to wwan, for my project

I have been sniffing around for some stuff for a project, where I’m gonna use a laptop motherboard” I found a motherboard that is pretty much plug-and-play that has USB-pd, but I can write more about that in a comment later”

@wendell

Long story short I was looking for 75 W gpu and have been thinking about a old 1060 3GB I have, that could draw power from the motherboard, but it also had a six pin since it needed more power

*So the first question is I’m not sure is it possible to limit the power draw of such a card so it only draws from the motherboard and doesn’t need the external

Since if that is possible then I have found a asus 4060 LP, that has the same draw power from a motherboard and six pin so maybe it will be be a better option than the 3050 6gb if limited to 75w, maybe that is something one of you are interested in testing since it might be cheaper to get a 4060 then a A2000 if I remember correctly, and be able to use frame generation

The Wi-Fi card to Wwan it’s just because I need to have a Sim card so I can internet, while taking a break from driving, but I’m not completely sure how it works but it is probably order something with use other places

Links to the stuff:
There are two versions of the graphics card, normal and oc
Search for asus 4060 LP or asus 4060 LP OC

And the adapter for Wi-Fi to wwan, that I’m not completely sure how it works, maybe it will be an interesting topic or maybe you can just if you have an idea tell me in The comments
Just go onto eBay homepage and then add this after on the link to find it

Thank, for all the answers that comes

You might be better off changing the location of this to the hardware → build a PC category. You’ll get more help over there

Thanks for the suggestion amber👍, cannot find a place to change the category, So I will be deleting this post maybe later and re-posting it there

But the main reason for this post was actually if Wendell, was Interested in testing this hypothesis/theory with the 4060, But maybe I’ll just see if I can find somebody who have tried this before

Oh that’s np, I changed it for you and @'d wendell

The motherboard will supply up to 75watts. So if the gpu does not require its own power connectors, it may comply with your requirements.

If I can find the link, there is an nvidia firmware tweak tool but I am unsure if it extended past Maxwell (gtx 900 series)

You could tune the power targets and voltage there in the firmware so there’s no need to run a windows OC tool like msi afterburner

It might be nice to do that, But when I’m thinking of stuff I wanna do I also want the average person to be able to do it but I think msi afterburner or something like it is the best

With these types of GPUs I’m talking about, they draw half of what they need from the motherboard And the other from the six pin,
So if you can just turn it down to 75 and only use the motherboard power, then maybe the 4060 i’m talking about will be better than a 3050 6gb

75 is the maximum draw, off of an x16 PCIe lane
Anything extra [ex., full fat boost], gets its assist by supplemental power cabling
Some vendor chip skus, can be had both ways [PCIe only or PCIe + _Pin Cable]
What are biggest concern(s), of using the GPU? [File Codecs / Gaming / …]

What do you need the GPU for? Do you just want something low-power with video out, or do you actually need it to do GPU stuff?

There are tons of cards based on older chipsets that can do the former. Geforce GT 710 is one of the lowest power cards out there and you can still buy them new. They can come with passive cooling, HH HL.

Or there are the Innodisk M.2 VGA cards that are really just a framebuffer with video out. They’re crazy expensive though because nobody buys them without a very specific need. Even the cables are hard to get and cost stupid $$$.

If you want a card that’s actually a GPU as the word’s used today, but without external power connectors, RTX 2000 Ada for sure. There are many other options as you start going back Nvidia GPU generations, the power envelope stays the same but the performance (and price) keeps dropping.

AMD and Intel both have recent cards with no external power connectors too.

When I looked at the 4060 it had a maximum power draw of 140w
Asus has made one SKU that draws 75 from the motherboard and 75 from the 6PIN”The one I’m talking about in question”

In my specific case, I want the best gaming performance within a 75 W limit, Without breaking the bank for a a2000, and if this works with the 4060 you could even get frame generation which is not supported on a2000, and for some reason they have not made a 4050 for desktop

Your expectations ,will need to be clawed back a bit
We [ultimately] gotten the short stick, when it came to newer low-wattage SKUs

One stealth release product recent, would be the 3050-6G
Further kneecapping the 3050, to typical nVIDIA misnaming a product
… But comparing to say GTX1650, it’ll have the DLSS support [+ RT frou-frou]

The A2000 it’s about an average 20% slower than a 3060 12 GB, and only uses Pcie power, that’s why this specific SKU I found with asus, is interesting since it has a split power design, so limiting it to only use PCie power, while 4060 is also more efficient, I think we’ve only 75 W of power, it can achieve the same performance and maybe More the a2000 in gaming, but with only 8GB ram, and being cheaper, this is why I want wendell, to test it if interested,
But I don’t know if he has seen the post yet🤷‍♂️

4060s requires an 8pin, including them LP builds [~115W]

It’s not cheap, but a RTX-4000 ada SFF [ NVIDIA RTX 4000 SFF Ada Generation Graphics Card ] sips just 70w and doesn’t sacrifice performance.

I think you should try and look at the specs from the website,
I just searched again asus 4060 lp found the two versions that they have went into the specs went down the list, it says six pin on Both

Maybe I should send a picture or you can find it yourself

I don’t know if this is allowed to ping you, but I tried looking through the rules and stuff and couldn’t find anything myself.

Hy @wendell, don’t know if you have seen this post yet, but I found a 4060 GPU, that might be interesting if it can be configured to 75 W only, it only has a six pin so it must be designed to get the power from the motherboard to hit its max watt usage,
And the reason I made this post about it is because I remember seeing a video with you where you were talking about testing some stuff with a a2000

And thank you for answering if you find this interesting
