My PC keeps crashing and restarting whenever I play a game

I seem to be having a problem with my PC. Whenever I play a game my PC will randomly crash and restart. There is no BSOD when it happens. The screen will go black and a few seconds later it will restart and I will have to log back into my PC.

I have had my PC since June and this problem started happening two Sundays ago when I was playing X-COM: Enemy Unknown and does it to all my games.

My Specs are: and FX-8150 8 core processor, AMD HD 7970 video card, 16 GB of RAM, and I am running Windows 7. I also have a Corsair water cooling system.

A very good friend of mine has been helping me with the problem and he said to ask here for help as well.

I would appreciate any help that can be provided.

It could be a few things. If your CPU is overclocked, then it might not be stable. Use Prime 95 and let it run for 24 hours to check for stability.

It might also be an overheating issue. Check your temperatures while you're gaming just to make sure your cpu or gpu isn't overheating. Just run hardware monitor while you're gaming. Play for about 10 to 15 minutes, close the game, and check the temps on your hardware.

It could just be a driver issue too. Boot your computer into safe mode and use Driver Sweeper to get rid of all of your video drivers. Then reboot and download the latest drivers from AMD's website. If the problem persists, then try removing the drivers again and installing an older version.

I think also you should check your power supply, i just repaired one with the same problem.....it had an intermittant short

I used Hardware Monitor and my CPU temp is at 39C (102F) and my video card temp is at 54C (129F). My PC isn't overclocked.

" Whenever I play a game my PC will randomly crash and restart..." Sounds like you overclocked.

1. Check if you overclocked, if so then go back to stock.

2. Test

3. Mostly likely its going to crash

4. If it does then put the game on low settings, it should crash as fast when on a higher settings.

5. if all 4 stages are correct, reinstall your OS.

I saw your post on your temps, but are those temps from idol or  when running prime. I belive the temps are of the former than the latter. post your temps with prime running or with some high load. Your pump in the watercooler could have died and or the thermal compound is bad. therefor, when you jump up to a high work load the thermal compound is to dry to function. If I'm wrong about the temps then check your compound. and run a mem test.

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone that offered help and advice. I appreciate it.

What PSU are you running? How many watts, rails and Amps per rail? I had the same problem a while ago. Turns out the PSU was on it's way out and couldn't handle the power requirements under load anymore, for some reason. Replaced it and the problem was gone. Does the GPU fan sometimes go to 100% when it crashes? Do you or your friend have another power supply you can try it with?

I reinstalled my operating system but it didn't seem to help. It crahses and restarts less frequently now but still does it. I tested my video card so I now that isn't an issue. It is either my processor or my power supply.

upload the files from c/windows/minidump, I can open them up and maybe see what's causing it

i know this is 2 weeks dead, but IDK if you got it fixed.  the memory kit i got seems to be kind of a lemon, and i cant overclock it from 1600 to 1866 (not a big deal) and it would BSOD and restart occasionally. i guess you ight try checking the memory if you havent.

all these are just guesses, if you can get me the minidumps, I can run an analysis, and check waht the crash dump says.

I have never checked  those before and I don't really know where they are located.

I am not to sure about the make and model of the PSU. My friend built it for me but I do know that it is 1200 watts so I am guessing it should be suffiecient. No, the GPU fan doesn't spin up. The screen will just randomly go black and restart after about 7-8 seconds. I don't have another power supply.

Update: A friend of mine looked at my PC and I thought he was able to fix the problem because it worked well for about a month. All of a sudden the problem is happening again. I checked the windows system even logs and I found four errors back to back saying there was a fatal hardware issue with a processor core. It doesn't say which cores so I am guessing the problem is my processor.

I don't believe it is overclocked but the core speed usually ranges from around 3970.75 MHz to 4272.22MHz. I have no idea of that is way to high or about right. I have and AMD FX-8150 8 core processor. I am decent with computers but nowehre near being able to overclock or being able to disable overclocking.

Have you tried reseating your proccessor, graphics card, and RAM? Also, I believe the 8150 is factory overclocked so it should be stable. Give AMD a call and tell them whats going on and try what they say. If it is your processor it should still be under warranty. If not, give your motherboard manufacturer a call, then the maker of your graphics card, and so on. Hope this helps! I learned from experience.
