I have a Gateway NV79c59u with an Intel Pentium... and win8
It has recently started losing it's connection to my home's wifi.
It just happens randomly. But it doesn't happen very fast to where it is unuseable..
My xbox 360 uses the same router, but wired connection. And it works flawlessly.
My cell phone uses the same wifi and I have not noticed if it drops out on the phone, so I think it is a laptop issue.
I have restarted the router to no avail.
Full 5 bar wireless connection currently and whenever it is connected, as the router is in the room adjacent to mine.
When it drops wifi, I just click on the connections and reconnect so I have no clue what is going on.
ANY suggestions are appreciated... before I take a sledge hammer to this pos laptop.
PS: I have done the dns flush bs before but to no avail.
Could be driver crash, check windows event viewer, are there any errors/criticals?
If the card is *broken*, what is unlikely, you can easlyly swap it out, just make sure you connect the black and white wire accordingly, but most likely, something causes it to crash, and so it disconnects from all networks.
Go to http://support.gateway.com/us/en/product/default.aspx?tab=1&modelId=2386 and get the most updated driver for your wireless nic. There are drivers for two different cards (Atheros and Broadcom) so to find out which one you have go to Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network Connections. Find 'Wireless Network Connection', right click it and choose Properties. It'll tell you which manufacturer made your card right at the top. You may have to refresh the page to see the driver listings.
I have a broadcom gigabit ethernet port and a Oualcom atheros wireless thing.
Not with Win8, but I had a similar issue in XP where I told the wireless card to Only use the N band (as opposed to Auto: A/B/G/N) and it worked.
I'm still having the same problems guys.. any other advice, besides getting a new laptop?
Another thought, does it Happen to do it after a specific period of time? IE: You turn the laptop on and say an hour later it just drops? If that happens, then I'd look into your temperatures and or checking the cables where the antenna attaches. For reference, it's normally in the same bay that your RAM is on the laptop. You'll see 2 or three wires connected to a card about the size of your thumb.
Have you tried having your phone on wifi at the same time to see if they drop at the same time? If that happens, then I'd think it's the router.
Also, how old is the laptop? Maybe you've got a bum unit and should get a warranty repair/replacement.
It's not over heating. It is almost 3 years old. Wifi works on my phone. So I really believe it is only a problem with my laptop. It's been about a month and it still happens... everyday..
Here is what exactly happens... I'm on google chrome doing whatever... and then bam out of nowhere I lose connection, I then click on the bars down in the right hand corner and bring up the available wifi connections and select mine, then it says it connects... but wait a few seconds and drops connection, then click connect to my wifi for a second time and then it connects and stays connected for awhile and then again it will randomly drop connection and then I always have to connect to my wifi twice before it will work for awhile... until it disconnects again. I hope that is more is a better explanation.
Any ideas on what causes this and how to fix it are greatly appreciated.
Gateway, Dell, Asus and several other manufacturers have had issues with windows 8 and wifi drivers. Check for an update and see if that resolves your issue. I've had to fix this issue on several computers in the last few months for customers.
(Note I haven't read through the thread so apologies if you've attempted this.)
