So I was a very big Windows fan over the past 3 years but lately W10 has just become a big pain to run and even update. With every update, if I was ever able to update, my privacy concerns with Cortana just grew and grew. This post will be a journal of me switching to Linux and the difficulties I go through.
-Day 1 (03/13/17) I installed KDE NEON on my laptop because my laptop won't boot into any distro if it's not Ubuntu or based on it. So it installed by completely getting rid of Windows. First boot was successful and run pretty smooth on my laptop but after that every single time i turn on my machine it gets stuck on the KDE loading screen. So I rebooted it into recovery mode, selected the option to repair broken packages, rebooted and finally it worked again but I need to do it every time I want to turn on my laptop so... I downloaded an iso of antergos and tried to install with no success at all it just gets stuck on the antergos logo. I still have some issues with Neon but I think it's the kernel's fault (4.8) but I will continue to change into antergos and updating this post. Any suggestions leave them below please, much appreciated.
-Day 2 (03/14/17) It still gets stuck on boot but now it allows me to type the password but after that nothing else shows on the screen. I rebooted onto recovery, updated grub bootloader, fix packages... Boom! Back to normal. For now. I just installed the Nvidia drivers to see if it was that the real problem but i still got to see if it will work properly. On a side note, I'm still trying to install Antergos but I don't know why it won't even load the live usb, it just gets stuck on the antergos logo.
Havent seen any mention of boot settings. Have you verified fastboot/secure boot are disabled? There are some machines that have integrated intel graphics and auxiliary nvidia gpu with some goofy thing called Optimus, that can cause issues too.
What issues are you having with NEON now? Also if you laptop has optimus it is a good idea to install the proprietary driver from Nvidia (there should be a "driver" or "Additional Drivers" application that will do that with one click).
You can try a different ubuntu-based distro that does not have KDE that might not be ideal for your system. Like either official Ubuntu, Mint or Ubuntu mate.
I used UEFI, turned off secure boot/ verified fast boot. I do remember that my laptop uses optimus but i didn't knew it could be the the reason i experience those errors when booting up.
When you install try the latest fedora as I've found it to work with most of my hardware. If you still encounter problems, before selecting install, hit space bar and check acpi=off and nomodeset. These are temporary but could guide you on the right path to figuring out what's wrong.
KDE NEON, has an OS based on it called Netrunner. Netrunner is by a German IT company called Blue Systems. 50% of Blue Systems is owned by Clemens Tönnies Sr, who is chairman of FC Schalke 04's board of directors. How cool is that? Also Blue Systems used to sponsor Kubuntu.
Optimus is not well supported by all distros yet. Surprisingly, Dell (as well as System 76) does ship some of their Optimus laptops with Ubuntu pre-installed, so if Optimus support is this is the cause of your problem, surely there is a solution that can be found.
It may help if you were to boot into the "Recovery" option at the GRUB menu, so that you can view the logs. Perhaps you can find a clue there, which will point you in the right direction.
