Why do I think this is a GPU issue?
- Well, when I built the rig in January everything ran fairly well. With everything seemingly running well, I went after some OCs. CPU went great. GPU not so much. I couldn't touch anything near what the standards people were getting (standards being 1200 core, 1200 for voltage, memory @ 1600 -- All of these were found from http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/radeon-hd-7970-overclock-review,3186-2.html) The OC was backed from overclock.net and the more spesific page from tom's. I used them as a guideline to build up to. I did it pretty slowly going up 5 for most things and then running tests FurMark, Heaven, and Kombuster. Temps were never an issue. Top I ever got was still less than 70C. CPU was running fine so I couldn't connect it with the problems. I got impatient after a while and started going up 10 or 20, but no big deal for most people it seems. Crash. Ok, I back off. At this point I realize I have barely touched Mem speeds, so I up those a bit. Artifacting everywhere. So, I just leave it at the stock OC of 1000 1375. My games start to "Stop working". Far Cry 3 seemed to love it, but I knew people were having problems with it, so I let it slide. More games start doing it. I contact Gigabyte's Tech support. I will let you skim through it here

Hi, I have been getting random crashes from time to time. They range from full on BSODs to "(Enter game here) has stopped responding". The most common is the game not responding and closing as well as Catalyst Control Center stopping to work. They are not consistent and do not show any real pattern. I could play all day long with no problem and a few days later I will get problems. Temps have not gone over 60C. The graphics card is at its stock OC and nothing more. When windows checks for a solution to be sent to Microsoft, I look at the details and it all seems to video card related, but of course no solution. I have tried uninstalling drivers and everything involved and re-installing. Drivers should be up to date. Is this an RMA or should I be looking somewhere else? I honestly don't want to go through the hassle of RMAs again. It is the last option.
edit It is now happening much more frequently. I get 5 minutes in and then the game stops responding. - Dear Customer,
Does it only occur during gaming or when exactly does it occur?
Do try testing other 3d applications with different version of the AMD
driver off their website and last would be to testing the card onto another PC. - Yes, it is in the middle of gaming, no real pattern as far as certain situations causing the crash. I have never had it crash outside of games and running the Unigine Heaven benchmark. What would be some good examples of 3d applications to try out other than games? I will give it a shot.
- Try testing with 3D Vantage and Furmark as well.
You had also tried the 12.10 and 12.11 driver off AMD website? - I have taken a couple of days of testing with 12.10, 12.11, and the new 13.1 drivers. In the testing software things would typically run smoothly for the most part. I would occasionally get extremely bad artifacting that would fill the screen - this would happen most in Unigine. I would restarting the computer and rerun it with no problems for a good hour or so with no problem. Temps normal. When I would go into games, the artifacts would come back, but not as majorly when in Unigine. I really have no idea what is happening. Should I try overclocking in CCC and up the core clock and the memory clock seperatly to see if one causes more problems than the other? Would that help find the problem? Say I bump memory up to 1400 and see if there's problems with that to start off with?
-- Possibly separate from the issue, but YouTube videos seem to be crashing shockwave also and cause the video to turn black with the yellow popup saying that is has crashed - this is in chrome. - Run the below utility and check whether if you have the latest bios available
for your card. - GV-R7970C-3GD.F10 ---- I believe that this one is the latest. So yes, it is up to date.
- Do attempt to test at lower resolution and the games at lower settings
to checking the results. If you feel the card maybe the issue and wish
to sending in for us to examine please submit your RMA request below - 'll do some more testing for a little bit. What could make a game just stop working in general? It always says "(enter game here) has stopped working". Would the card be the only thing causing this? Are there any other angles to isolate certain parts to recreate the crash?
- Please test with different 3d games along with applications to confirm the
results. If there is another PC available you can try moving this card over
to the other PC as well to run test to confirm this result.
- So that's it. Nothing I haven't really tried. Now current time: my games will very simply close. No more pop-up saying that it stopped working or anything. Yesterday I got that fuzzy white screen with the lines and weird audio, so I just restarted my comp since I couldn't get out of it. Other times it may just freeze and I will Ctrl+Alt+Del to close it from there. Everything is up to date at this point. It is really starting to bother me at this point, so i reach out to you guys who may or may not have read this insanely long post. Thanks if you read through.
