My Friends Freezing Problem

This is a question from a friend of mine who's computer is freezing when she tries to shut it down.
I would like to know if anyone can give me ideas on how to fix my problem with my computer. I have a WD external hard drive, and when it is plugged in my computer freezes at shut down. It gets as far as that shutdown screen right before the computer turns off and just sticks there endlessly unless I manually shut it off.

A few of the scenarios include:

FREEZES when

1) plugged in before startup, shutting down without ejecting.

2) having it plugged in before startup, shutting down with ejecting/unplugging first

NO FREEZE when

1) plugging it in AFTER startup, shutting down with or without it ejected

It seems as though it only freezes during shut down if it started up with the hard drive plugged in. I have tried this using multiple usb ports so it does not have to do with the physical port. I also have tried another WD external hard drive and it did the same thing with that one as well. The external hard drives
Maybe try a motherboard BIOS update? That could possibly fix the problem

ummmmmm....first thing I would try would probably be reinstalling USB controller driver.

I used to have a similar problem with an old WD external and my old laptop, but i never figured it out
