A year ago I got an ATI 5850 Black Edition as a hand me down. Nowadays I'm playing Borderlands 2 with PhysX on High and am getting fram drops during driving and large fights. I was wondering how high I could overclock this card and how I would do so. I have no former experience in overclocking.
P.S. How much of a difference would I be looking at in dps?
don't overclock yet, but download the latest version of msi after burner. it's a really easy over clocking tool and it tells you alot of info of whats going on in real-time (i've used it)
What are your current temps running borderlands on High? As i recall the 5850 was a hotter card. (but i could be wrong)
you might not want to overclock it if it's already running close to 70C. and if fps is really an issue it might not be a bad idea to upgrade to a 7850/70 (if you're staying amd)
You have to realize that PhysX is not going to run off of an AMD Radeon GPU since they don't support the technology. PhysX will run off of your CPU if you have an AMD card, so if you're only experiencing framerate drops after you set PhysX to high, it's because your CPU is bottlenecking you.
Use MSI Afterburner to overclock the GPU. Just make sure you don't go above your maximum safe voltage. Overclocking your CPU in the bios might not be a bad idea either.
I will download MSI afterBurner. I didn't know it worked with non ASI cards! Will that tool tell me my Temps? The only hardware toold I have installed is CPU-Z.
Well then play around with MSI Afterburner, and use a benchmarking program to stability test it. I would recommend using Furmark, 3DMark11, and Heaven to stability test your GPU. If you're still not happy with performance then you're going to have to get a new card or crossfire it with another 5850 if you can find one.
Just installed After burner. Not sure what I did but after putting the GUI into "BIG MODE" my fnas started to go crazy fast. I'm going to redowload the drivers and reinstall after burner.
