Music Room Build Thread

As stated in the “What have you worked on Today” thread, I’ve decided to start a thread dedicated to building up my music room. Looking for suggestions on making this space as suited for this as possible. So, let’s start with some photos of the space.

Starting with the door, a gap that needs sealing to reduce the sound leakage. There used to be carpet up here so they cut the doors higher. This is an easy fix, but probably the first that will get done.

A view from the front. Where the Roland drumset is, is where I’d like to put one of those bunk bed/desk deals, so I can stuff a PC for recording underneath and have an extra place for folks to sleep when we have guests over. The electronic drumset itself will likely get taken down for now. It was cool in 2003, but after having my acoustic back, I can’t play on the old-style pads anymore. Upgrades to the new mesh pads that give the same feedback as an acoustic will happen eventually.

Last shot from the opposite corner.

I’d estimate I have around 15 stringed instruments I’d like to hang on the walls for easy access/storage. Not too concerned about errant sound being picked up while recording, I’m not looking to make a platinum album, just to have everything in one space.

I want sound panels for the walls, maybe even the ceiling, but on the walls I’m wondering if whatever I use if I can then mount my string swing mounts over it, or if I should hang all of my instruments first and then use acoustic panels in between and around them. Open to suggestions on on this one.

I’ll likely get an additional surround for my acoustic drumset, but waiting on that as I need to get some cymbal stands, and a carpet, to get everything setup. Been dying to use my Paiste 2002 cymbal set I’ve had for years now stashed away in a closet.

Progress will likely be slow, but I’ve got to start somewhere. I don’t see myself moving again any time soon, so I want this space to be as functional as possible for years to come!

I will need to graft on some wood onto the bottom of the door as the piece I got to fill the gap still comes up about a half inch too short. Fortunately, I have plenty of edge cuts from trimming down 2x4s that I can I can make the shims I need. It’s just a matter of getting over to the other house where all my woodworking tools are.

they make some cool drop sils if you want something a bit fancier.
They can be mounted on the back of the door or routed out on the bottom of the door

best practice is to make a room within a room. tennisballs on the floor and put a floating floor on it.

i would go for extra wall a air cap. and two thick drywall . on that you will need to aply stuf to deal with the reflections

Making a room sound good is a science. basicly you needs lots of carpets. and then some more. curtains and then some more curtains.

about doors. double doors is better and no air caps

Moving blankets are pretty cheap and can be hung on the wall / windows / doors for pretty cheap.

for a studio we used to build a extra wall twith 2by four’s (i think thats the american term) isolation between it. and then carpets over it. It really helped with the reflection

for recording check out avb. its the audio network protocol that has best compatiblity with linux.

i love the odd shapes. with some good placed reflecters you could make it good sounding.

this website and his video’s helped me a lot
https://www.acousticsinsider.com/

the problems with those rooms they are never finisht and you can always inproof them. But building them its difrent every time.

Those odd shapes are going to give you bliss in sound. but they are going to give you a couple of headacke’s first

but first you have to start killing reflections

go stand in the midle of the room and clap really hard. listen to the reflections .

Awesome! This is the feedback I was looking for!

Home Depot didn’t have those, as those would have been a better choice. I actually need something similar for my office, as it’s the same story… 1" of clearance underneath.

Order them online, HD doesnt have the good stuff.

Will do!

I think my goal for today after accomplishing some work things is to start hanging the guitars to get the space cleared of cases and make it easier to grab what I want to play. I can do the acoustic paneling around them down the road.

I’m still on the fence about taking down the electronic drumset. The kick pedal is in need of repair and is really the only thing keeping it from being playable, but it’s just not the same as the acoustic. I don’t know, I need to really think about this.

Think i might give this one a shot

Havent orderd mine yet, have one or two doors I will probably want to try it on.

Oh, those are cool, I like that. Price really isn’t that bad, either.

Yeah pretty reasonable, need to figure out what gasket to get for the rest of the door, but need the doors to actually arrive first.

Something that’s on the to-do list around the entire house is door replacement. Despite this being a relatively expensive home, the contractors opted for the cheap, hollow doors.

If I had a proper woodworking shop, I’d just simply make my own doors and call it a day. Alas, no space for such activities.

Solid wood doors and good hardware add up, I think I paid like 5k for like 5 doors “prehung” with hardware from https://solidhardwooddoors.com/ (all hardware and painted with all custom sizes in paint grade soft maple)

Oh, that’s perfect. I’ll need to do a headcount of the doors that need replacing. I was initially thinking of just the doors themselves and using the existing framing, but there may be issues with fit and finish and I don’t really want to have to do work on each door just to get it to fit right. Rather yank out the whole frame and install new. But we’ll see.

Didn’t get nearly as far as I wanted to yesterday on account of other little things popping up.

Maybe today!
