Multi-Core Gaming

Hello guys, I have recently purchased a AMD FX 8350 processor to replace my Phenom II x4 965 BE. First I was going to go with a i7 4770k or a 3770k, but I decided that the 8350 was much better value for money and not a drastic performance difference (with OC of course). My question is, do you guys think that as time goes on developers might put some more effort into multi threading games (hopes for mantel)? I know it's a very general question, but I'm just wondering if it may have been better to go with a powerful quad core with hyperthreading instead of a octacore with weaker single thread performance.              Thanks, Sigma

You made a wise choice, it's still pretty damn fast single-threaded especially with the monster overclocks people are getting on it. Not to mention pretty much all new games besides indie games(will run well anyways) will use mult-threading heavily. Especially now since all the new consoles use 8 core processors.

Now that the consoles have eight-core APU's, I don't see why games won't be optimized for several cores.

Alright, thanks for answering my question, I know it's frequently asked, but I just wanted to get some more people's opinions. It's good to have some reaffirmation that the FX-8350 was a good choice (got myself a Noctua NH-U12P Se2 for cooling, so I don't think OC'ing will be a problem ;) )

Didn't the 360 have a hyper threaded tri core? meaning 6 threads, yet most game engines still used 2 threads until not long ago.  I hope they will make game engines use all avalible threads soon, but I honestly have doubts.  Granted with as weak as the console's cpus are I can see even an fx 4300 being good for quite a few years longer.

no, it was an IBM tri-core. not hyperthreaded

I'm currently running a Phenom x4 965, i am wondering would my motherboard be able to handle the 8350?
I've got the Asrock 970 extreme 4.
I think the 8core processors will run the "next gen" games great, since they are much like the console's CPU's and have triple the clock speed =)

edit: typo

Yes and no. Over the past couple years we've started to see more games take advantage of 4 and even 6-8 cores/threads, and because the consoles are also using 8 core APUs that will increase the development of games to run well on many cores. But also no, because we're also moving towards processing power being done on the GPU instead of the CPU, and there are some games now that are well enough written that you get identical framerates on an i3 as you do on an i7 extreme edition cpu and use the GPU almost exclusively.

Either way, the FX 8350 is by no means a poor choice. Good CPU and will be good for quite some time, and single-threaded performance is definitely becoming less important.
