So, in February someone at work tripped over the charger of my laptop and it fell down, breaking the right hinge and making the screen disconnected. I tried to get it repaired at a computer repair company and they basically ripped me off. In the initial call they said if they had to solder something on the mobo I'd look at roughly $330 in costs, if not somewhere around $168 which he said it would most likely cost considering it was just the hinge (which it was, and is). $168 seemed OK considering keeping the warranty and all that jazz.
They charged $330 to open it, reconnect the screen, then assembling the computer again. Why the price? Because they had to run "diagnostics" on it. Didn't even repair the hinge, and after opening and closing the lid 3 times it disconnected again. (Also, Norwegian prices are just fucked in general)
TL;DR Done with trying to do things the "right" way and I'll just repair it myself.
Since you guys (Tek) seem to have a lot to do with MSi, I have a few questions.
- First of all, as far as I've gathered of information the right hinge is replaceable without a new LCD-panel. Specifically, there should be a metal hinge one should be able to replace and that's it, nothing more. I wonder if you can confirm this? Also, if you have any specific part to point me to I'd be happy as can be, as info about which hinge I need has been diffuse at best
- If it is doable, then: Is it hard to replace a hinge at all? I've done repairs on other laptops before, but as far as the disassembly-guide goes I'll have to remove everything to get to the hinge, a lot further than I've gone before. Provided I use standard computer-care to do this (as in, the right screws, proper torque, no static electricity), are there any specifics I need to know for this exact endeavour?
