MS-A1 Barebone Build - No Boot

I can’t get my new MS-A1 boot. I initially put a Rysen 9700x, hoping for the best and knowing Minisforum says that a BIOS update would be needed. I also put Crucial 96 GB 5600 mhz memory.

I waited more that 5 minutes for the boot up to get the memory timing charactorized and not boot. My USB keyboard lites don’t light up. The power brick lights is green, the fans sping and the power light on the unit is a pretty blue. No POST on the screen. :frowning:

I pulled the 9700x and replaced a 8700g and even pulled the 96 GB memory and replaced with a single 16 GB 5200 mhz memory and still not boot.

I have spent two weeks emailing back an forth with Minisforum support team and getting a different support person each iteration of trouble shooting. They now want me to send a video of me doing the trouble shooting steps. I’ve spent over 20 hours trouble shooting.

Has anyone had a similar experience with Minisforum? I a commited use case for this box and was wondering if I should just buy another one and eat the cost. Thoughts?

Hey,

Where did you get too with this? I noticed the website says it supports 9000 series Ryzen with a bios update. can support AMD 9000 series with a BIOS update yet if you go to the support page there is no BIOS to download. So does the factory bios support it or they not providing an update for some reason.

I got my own thread open about random reboot issue with my MS-A1, yet to find root cause. Support have offered to exchange it but since I can’t reproduce the issue it just randomly happens, I can’t tracked down the source of the issue. I may just get them to replace it on the off chance it’s hardware and see if the problem comes back. If it could be firmware, CPU, memory or NVMe disks. Support did kind of ignore my questions about a new bios, so I’m wondering either they know there’s an issue with some units so just replacing them or ignoring me… not entirely sure which.

This was their email response to me this morning:

"At present, there is no internal update BIOS out, I only have an unofficial BIOS version, you can try, but if not, you need to wait for the official version

I’m still awaiting a reply for the supported CPUs list.
BE CAREFUL. As stated from the email, this is an unofficial BIOS and could create irreparable changes to your system.

Did you use this BIOS yourself for the 9000 series CPUs? Did you also notice any new BIOS settings or anything?

Hi there,

Just received a new MS-A1 that’s running BIOS 1.06. It’s dated from 8/14/24.

As a test, I have it running with a 9900X and it boots just fine. Memory training was quick, with 64GB @ 4800.

There’s a few changes to this one versus the other models released earlier. Mine has a second fan sitting in the NVME SSD area. The new fan plate blocks using u.2 SSD’s, but provides a large heatsink directly connected to the CPU cooler on top. The original models just had a backing plate, and the u.2 board. No u.2 board with mine.

Still running burn-in tests to see how the CPU temps are in the short to mid-term.

HTH

Oh very interesting, I hope my replacement unit has this updated bios.

I may miss the U.2 one day but since I can’t run dual U.2, I probably never will. Since I’d ideally want to mirror them. My unit was running mirrored M.2 and I will with the new replacement when it arrives

New MS-A1 arrived, and the fan on the underside has been moved to the other side. So the M.2 is no longer cooled by a heatsink. Also no U.2 carrier card. Which is interesting because the U.2 to M.2 switch is still on the motherboard. I can only assume the reason for the redesigned heatsink is to help cool some VRMs or something on the underside of the motherboard.

BIOS 1.0.6 on this unit as well.

Just deployed it in the DC, shall see how it fairs, I’ve not changed anything on the OS configuration. Lets see how it goes.

Can you make this bios available please. Just sitting here with a machine a 9950x and it won’t even post. Tried a 7000 series cpu and it’s running bios 1.03. Reached out to them but still nothing on a bios update.

I wish I could give you a copy, but my unit came with that version out of the box.

I ordered MS-A1. According to Minisforum support the new batch is all upgraded to bios v1.06. If you contact the support, they will provided you to a Google Drive URL to download the non-public version. I do not know if that version differs from the bios delivered with the new batch (= public), but that seems to be the process they have as for now.

I have downloaded the updated bios. The instructions says this:

“To flash this BIOS MOS dedicated radiator required. If not, Black screen and automatic shutdown are very likely to occur. If you have to use this BIOS You need manually set TDP to 65000mw(65W) in AMD CBS->SMU Setting-> Manual TDP.”

For me personally, I will probably go with a Phoenix processor as for now.

What do they mean by BIOS MOS dedicated radiator is required to flash the bios… is that he redesigned fan placement they speaking of?

I had the same problem when I used the old ram from my um690. Turns out the ram was the fault. Got new ram and the problem was solved
