So I'm moving to Texas for reasons and I'm currently living in Canada. We're pretty free with our net here so I'm very much worried about how I'm going to have to..... Restrain my "exploration" of the net. Just pretend you're a grey hat. What would you need to be aware of in another country (things like ISPs, gov etc etc.)
Lucky your going to Texas and not one of the really bad states. Texas is pretty conservative about alot of things(except Austin) and it's not full of cowboys. Maybe someone who lived in Texas can you tell you more than I can but as far as I know it's not too bad. And interstate speed limits are 80.
I think I'm moving just outside of Austin.
Well I am a Texas transplant. In Austin area there is both Google Fiber and Grande that offer gigabit internet. Private Internet Access have a server in Dallas that gets good speeds.
There is no state income tax so that is pretty cool. Property tax can be pricey depending on the Area though.
And There are a lot of conventions in Dallas, Huston, San Antonio. The conventions are everything from gaming like Quake Con and Pax South, Comicon, Open Source conventions, and the utter craziness of South by South West in Austin.
The biggest advice I can give you is to Explore. Texas hasthe largest protected barrier Island, Padre Island and Has one of the largest parks anywhere, Big Bend. You have some of the largest cities in the US within driving distance. Hill country south of the City is famous for its barbecue. If you just want to get away from it West Texas is a desert. Many of the South texas Ranches do hunting trips and Lease rentals. The Gulf coast from Port Aranas, Corpus Christii, South Padre Island are fantastic beaches for catching fish and eye candy. Eastern Texas has a Cajun Flare so it's not bad to check out.
Austin has a huge live music scene so go enjoy the Night Life and catch a concert During Austin City Limits which is a month of concerts every weekend. The restaurants are top notch and recommend trying them.
Since you are in Canada the heat will be new to you so drink lots of water many of the Cananadians I know over heat because they don't drink enough. You will get used to it after a few months. Winter without snow may be shocking to you but you will be glad not to have to shovel any more.
Wow that's really great, I guess I can use google fiber with a VPN and I should be fine.
Probably no real reason to use a VPN on Google Fiber, unless you're worried about the NSA.
good thing rick perry isnt the governor anymore
He handed out death sentences like candy didn't he?
"pretend you're a grey hat"
Also I don't trust google with my data. I'll prolly be building my own mail server when I'm there anyways.
not only that but cut alot of "family services"
Google Fibre should be fine, take that from someone who hawk eyes Google.
Texas also only fines for drug minor drug offenses and is looking at legalizing soon if you care. I also added some more non tech stuff in my first post you should look at.
Wow thanks for all the info! I really appreciate all the effort you put into finding stuff!
Thanks for the reassurance!
Just think of Texas as Alberta with better Weather and taxes that's how the Canadians describe it.
If you have an Issue with Google, Grande Communications also has gigabit fiber in Austin and is around the same price.
Oh my mistake everyone, I'm going just outside of Houston
Then go with Grande if you can they have over 100Mbs. There is a ton of stuff to Do in Houston as well it is the 4th largest City in the US. Galveston is just to the east for beaches and fishing. Granted Corpus and Port Aransas have better beaches.
Houston also has Greenlee's which delivers local farm fresh food to you house which is pretty baller.
San Antonio is West of you if you want to Check out Tex Mex culture.
Houston was also the first city to have a Lesbian as Mayor in the US so it isn't overly close minded.
Thanks man, I really do appreciate all the effort you put into your posts!
How old are you? If you are going to High School it can be a mixed mag Some Schools are really good others are terrible. Texas does have a lot of charter schools so if normal public school doesn't work out there is always that.
