Does anyone know a good linux distro to replace windows cuz there are so many distros and i dont know with one will be the best one for me
which one in your opinion is the most versatile im usually playing games and edit videos what do you think ?
Most versatile: Arch
Most Customizeable: Slackware
Most Dependable: Debian
Most Features: OpenSuse
go on distrowatch.com and have a look around. Once you learn linux it doesn't matter what you use. They're all the same basis.
I'm an arch and slackware user so I can help you a little bit. But I'm only going to go so far as to give you a little push. You'll have to do the rest.
thanks for the help and the site link :p ^^
I moved your posts to a new topic.
On the question. I can highly recommend Fedora, it's up to date, has good support and community.
The best thing is to try a couple and see.
I'd avoid slack and arch and debian unless there's a specific reason you need them. None are particularly new user friendly in specific areas.
OpenSUSE is a good one to try it's somewhat similar to Fedora.
A lot of people recommend Ubuntu . I'm not overly fond of recommending it to new users mainly because of how they do things.
For playing games and video work a more up to date distro is best. Fedora and Opensuse mainly.
Manjaro, It's Arch without the hassle.
I don't want to get too off topic. How does it deal with updates?
What's this? For proprietary hardware?
I'm assuming it still relies on AUR?
Ubuntu is one of the simplest ones to start with, if you haven't tried any other distros before.
I'm not fond of AUR which is why I ask. It's not the most secure thing in the world. Actually one of the reasons I switched away from Arch.
Sounds like there GUI update works well. Similar to Fedora gnome-software. Fedora doesn't have the driver selection thing obviously as it doesn't ship proprietary by default.
Are they 100% open source now? I always they though they made exceptions on drivers and firmware.
There is only one exception to Fedora and that's binary firmware. Otherwise proprietary software cannot be included in official repositories.
It also isn't included if it's legally encountered or if it breaks US law.
For a secure distro Fedora hits almost every mark from download to actually using it.
Debian does have some decent security as well with things like reproducible builds, but you need specific reasons for that.
yeah was reading it now.
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Licensing:Main
but that part on Gnu.org about Fedora (its old text) can be updated then?
http://www.gnu.org/distros/common-distros.html
But they still claim they ship nonfree stuff.
Because there's binary firmware it can go on the GNU list. We for debian because the firmware is available in official repos.
It's really unfortunate that binary firmware even exists..
well just gonna send them a email..maybe they can clear stuff up or add Fedora to the list.
and emails has been send now wait for there reply :p
I'd recommend Linux Mint Cinnamon for having the Windows-ish interface.
You should have preinstalled most of the software for the average daily chores on any distro. You can get right into using the terminal right away while on other distros you would be confused by the UI beeing up side down.
I have tried and played with manny diffrent distribution over the last year.
And if i have to make a certain list of distributions that i think are worth looking.
Debian based.
- MX15 one of the better debian based distributions imo.
Ubuntu based;
- Ubuntu Mate.
- Linux Mint.
- Chalet OS - Basicly Xubuntu but with a Windows 7 look.
- Linux Lite.
RPM based.
- Fedora
- OpenSuse.
Arch based.
- Manjaro.
Go with Linux mint. Im currently running ubuntu gnome for shits and giggles and even though it is meant to be stable its hasn't been exactly wonderful, im keeping on in with it though as i have a billion tweaks on it already. Mint has been my goto for years it is excellent.
If you move away from Debian base, don't just go with Arch because people say so, go try Fedora first.
