Moving into a place that only offers me wifi

Hello!

So as the title says i'm going to be moving into a place that only offers me wifi. The only problem with this is the fact that I've no intentions of actually buying wireless cards for the 3 computers i'm bringing. I was considering doing a bridge or something along those lines.

I've have a router that I can do whatever I want to with, it's a linksys wrt350n v2(hoped it was v1 for dd wrt) could also buy some equipment in the 100 USD range.

The equipment that i'm going to be running in this dorm, 1 server running ubuntu, 1 computer running ubuntu, 1 computer running windows.

I will also bring a laptop but I don't take that into consideration as it already has the ability to connect to wireless.

Hope some of you bright peeps might help me out!

Cheers,
Lame

Something like this plugged into a switch?

You may be able to get your own router to do the same thing, but it's not something I've attempted. Although I'm curious now :)

Just to check I'll do some experiments today to check if I can get it to work!

Thanks for the suggestion though!

As for switches I already have this one: SG100D-08

Any deceny router in bridge mode should do the trick but i know very little about networking

Thanks to @wolfleben, i found that your router does not have a bridge option which is what you will need.
I would suggest buying a new router with a bridge function that is capable of the highest wifi speeds offered at your dorm.
Also i could be completely wrong, do some searching for setting up a wireless bridge and see which routers people prefer.

Might just see if I'm able to trade in the router I have with my parents router the asus ac68u, hopefully they'll agree that the router is a better fit for me than for them..

Who knows maybe i'll throw in some remote support to sweeten the deal :p

Anyways appreciate all the help!

Have a good one!

Is this for a dorm? I've mentioned in another post somewhere with the same idea- you might want to check your university internet policy first. Having a subnet the school doesn't know about is a no-no, at least where I'm at. I would make sure its cool first.

Yeah, I got the impression that the OP is going to be living in a dorm and that his only way of using the dorm internet would be WiFi with no ethernet ports around.

So yes, I'd ask your school/university about the internet policies first before making any purchases.

Regarding what you should purchase, a wireless bridge if you wish to grab the WiFi and then route it wired to your PC's.
But don't expect stellar performance and you should definitely look at something hell of a lot more recent than that ancient Linksys 54Mbps 802.11g bridge mentioned above. Something with 802.11ac would be preferable..

Ok, so I'll send the school an email tomorrow or possibly call them and ask what their policies on networks are.

But to be fair I wouldn't be having this problem if they only had ethernet ports in the dorms..

I will keep you guys updated when I get an answer might need some purchase advice if it's OK for me to do this :)

Cheers!

Maybe not use that one, as it's almost 10 years old and only uses wireless g.

Still waiting for them to reply.. If it's OK with the school I'll use this:

My parents agreed to let me have it for some remote computer troubleshooting :)

Maybe if you take a wireless NIC to put into your server and you use it like a WAN interface in a virtualbox that runs PF sense and you virtualise all the others things that you do... so your server become a router and a server in the same box :-)

this is actually a pretty cool idea. I've wanted to use pfsense for a while now, do you have any experience with it? Would have to buy a wireless nic though. I'll see if I can find anything cheap!

I 've tried PF sense in a old workstation... pretty reliable...
I didn't try in a virtualbox but I saw a vidéo that shows that it is possible and well used in entreprise.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bkWJ8Cmn03I

So that's the link to the video... and basicaly, what's great with PF sense, is that you can do whatever you want with your NIC's multi-wan, multi-lan... and because it will be virtualised, it ll be more easy then normal...

maybe try with a USB nic something realy cheap to test it and then if it works, upgrade it to something more powerfull...

(for the how to setup PF sense, type router tek syndicate in youtube ;-) )

I'm jealous.

why?

I have DSL. Starwars download is at 65%.......after a week.

recked :-D I have vdsl.. prety fast... and before that I had coaxial 200mbit/s bro :-D maybe consider upgrading your internet plan...

I got mad at our cable company and told them they have 24 hrs to get their %$@& out of my house.
I may get an antenna for the TV or see what I can do to improve my DSL speed. I love how much we save on the bill.

I did a hack with PPPOE on my vdsl line... Our ISP authorize to use 3 times the same PPPOE and the bandwidth is limited on PPPOE so I took a Ubiquiti edge max and configured it in 2 WAN to my internet "BOX" like the ISP said and use 2 times the same PPPOE so I double my internet speed.

ISP's sucks... if you look at it, we have a international fiber that make 31Tbit/s that cross our contry (belgium) we can't use it because our ISP's wont pay to use it... and they are 3 to share the same infrastructure so no one can defeat the other... Yeah it sucks but we can't do anything... just hack what we can to get faster internet
