Mouse tracking issues

I just finished my new pc build, but shortly after getting it all up and running I ran into tracking issues with my mouse, where my cursor appears to just lag behind and/or jump ahead.

I had been using this mouse (Logitech Performance Mouse MX) without any issues for about a year now on my previous computer.

Any ideas what could be causing it?

EDIT: I just tried my old Logitech LX8 and I'm having the same issue.

EDIT2: It doesn't do it constantly just every so often--a few times a minute or so.

My first suspicion would be a small piece of dirt, lint or a similar piece of crud stuck somewhere around the tracking mechanism. And given that it's likely an optical mouse of some sort, it probably just needs a quick blow job to get it working 100% again (mice like that, you know).  ;-)

Yep, laser. Also, I had already tried that with no luck.

  • Check your dpc latency > http://www.thesycon.de/deu/latency_check.shtml - if it spikes thats your problem
  • Change usb port
  • Update drivers for port and or for your mouse.

I had no latency issues, and the usb + mouse drivers are both up to date. Apparently the chipset driver update didn't actually install when I thought it had earlier today...so with any luck that should fix it.

That sounds like it should fix it. Just make sure to get the most up to date from your manufacturer's website.

I'm still having issues.... although not as much.

I was playing black ops 2 again earlier today and it works fine but then every so often it just doesn't really work...It either doesn't move at all or it moves erratically, and then it reverts to working normally again...
