Will standard $20 mice with 800-1000dpi be any good anymore if 4k becomes standard for computer monitors?

maybe around a thousand dpi, but i would think mice in the range of 2000 - 4000 or more would be optimal for 4k, other wise you may end up pushing your hand across the desk to get midway to the other side of the screen
Depends on your preferred sensitivity.
Depending on the screen size, 2160p (4K abbreviation is retarded) requires probably two to three times more DPI for the same sensitivity without jumping pixels.
If you currently play with something like 400 DPI, you'd be fine either way but if you need something like 1000 DPI for 1080p, you'll need a more expensive mouse.
set your windows mouse sensitivity to 6 or right in the middle and adjust you mouses sensitivity.
I have my corsair M65 set to 2600dpi. I play on a 27'in 1440p monitor.
From my experience, high dpi means a smoother movement. It is the sensitivity in Windows and your games that you should really be worried about. Most decent mice have at least 3000 dpi iirc (mine has 5700 for example), and that should be enough or things to be nice and smooth. Just adjust the sensitivity in Windows (search for "mouse" in the start menu and you should find where to mess with the settings) to your liking.
For higher accuracy sensitivity in windows settings should always be set to 6/11.

yes. DPI is dots per inch. or inother words how many pixels your cursor will move when you physically move the mouse 1 inch.
But this can be missleading in the real world because you could use a 5in 1080p phone screen and move the mouse one inch and it move 1080p (1080dpi) but you only see it move 5inches. So monitor size can be a factor.
Since my monitor is 27'in If it was half that I would need ot double my dpi to get it to move the same distance across my eye. Take it with a grain of salt though. This is how i perceive it. May be different to you.

With Mionix software DPI is independent from mouse sensitivity. I'm not very knowledgeable about mice though. I use 8200 DPI with the sensitivity on 4 out of 10. I'm not sure if one auto adjusts the other when I change it so I could just be giving misinformation.
