Motherboard Throttling CPU

I bought an FX 6300 early in January to replace my Phenom II x4 965 so I could get more performance. I did get the desired performance boost, but in most games at random I will get CPU lag spikes, I have changed every setting possible in the BIOS that might be the problem, but it still continues. I notice CPU temp is only around 20C idle and 40C max when at load. When I had the Phenom II, I could stream and record with no problems, but now frame rate drops even harder when I record or stream. Is it possible my cheap 770 motherboard could be the bottleneck? It is an ASRock 770iCafe AM3+ motherboard. I have all drivers up to date as well as the BIOS version. Running Windows 7 64bit. GTX 760 GPU and a 500w PSU from Cooler Master.

I'm not sure what chipset is the Asrock board, probably a 760g chipset most likely.Have you tried it on the stock BIOS that came with the mobo that may be supported for the fx6300, if not try downflashing it to the point where it was the first revision to support the amd fx6300 and also look around your motherboard to see if anything else around the cpu VRMS heatsinks that are laid on the motherboard see if its hot and i mean hot to touch and if it is you may need a mobo upgrade.

The chipset is 770, and I can't downgrade the BIOS version as the FX CPU will not work, manufacturer claims it will only work with the newest BIOS version.

you need a mobo upgrade at this point. did a bit of googling the chipset, and yeah its not going to cut it for the amd fx 6300

Yes it is probably you motherboard that is a limiting factor. I checked your MB manual, and there seems to be no options for turning off APM (Application Power Management) nor turning on HPC (prevents Throttling when Socket Temp gets high). Turning off Turbo Core is sometimes the same as turning off APM. As a rule you would want to turn off everything power save related to test, but it seems like your motherboard isn't up to it. You pretty much always want to turn off Turbo Core when overclocking however.

Piledriver CPUs need a lot of power, especially if you want to overclock. You could try some small, high RPM fans on the VRM heatsink on the MB, but probably the current is just too high for them.

please post in the correct section next time.
