I took my 7900XTX Taichi out for the 1st time and now the PCIE slot doesn’t really “lock” anymore. There is no noticeable click once the GPU is put in. This is the x-16 slot, the top slot on the motherboard. The GPU still works within the slot.
Should I send the motherboard back to get replaced?
It is almost impossible to do that since the cooler and gpu are right next to each other with no space for my hand to reach. Seems the tab is in place. I was unable push it out with a small amount of force with a chopstick.
The part that worries me is that i can shimmy the GPU out of the PCIE socket. Which now as i write this, how is the GPU locked in the socket? I’m thinking by the amount of weight by the GPU alone is it staying in place. Not sure if that is a good thing.
It’ll probably be fine. You can get a slot bracket for extra support if it really bugs you. I’ve used those before when I was into watercooling. They’re pretty nifty.
If you can’t push it down with a chopstick, but the GPU slides out of the socket, the tab is not locked in place. Does the tab move much if you lift it from the outer side? If so, try lifting it from the side with said chopstick, while gently pressing the GPU into the slot from the tab-side.
The GPU is locked into the socket by a lever system. When the furthest tab on the GPU fits into the locking-slot, it catches on the inner-side of the tab, inside the locking slot, and presses it in, which forces the tab to rotate, pushing the outer side up and over the hook, locking it in place.
It’s like a seesaw, but with a big hook pressing down one end, and the other is a latch designed to wrap around said hook.
