My PC is randomly freezing and shutting down.
I think my motherboard is dying, as it fails to detect my SSD or the HDD sometimes.
The other option is that both drives are dying, even though crystaldiskinfo says they're both fine.
Has anyone encountered a problem like this?
might be a bad OS, but I don't think that it's that likely
There are many things it could be from the age of the SSD or HDD to age Power Supply to yes a mother board issue. You need to list more information. I have noticed my self some HDD's tend to fail close to there warranty date. also depends if you run the machine 24 hours a day vs only power on while in use.
You can't tell if it's the motherboard or the SSD giving up on you right now. You should do some testing swapping out parts and testing them one by one. Any defective component may lead to those issues. But you can try to use the Windows Event Viewer to try to sort out the problem on your own without testing.
Had this same issue of hardware not being detected years ago. The power supply was failing.
I would make sure that your system has good airflow as well. Also, make sure your system is regularly cleaned out. I've had machines that just needed a good dusting and suddenly they operate like new again.
Will try testing from another power supply that works. Also, I'l try to boot from the SSD on another motherboard to see if the drive is dying. Have had some luck switching SATA ports and it worked for a short while.
It's pretty clean and the only dust that there is is very minimal and is on the casing of the power supply. Have it running (sort of) without the side panel on, so airflow shouldn't be a big problem.
try throwing whole SMART info of your ssd here, that can say a lot
System specs?
Anyway, yes thise could realy be allot of things.
From a hardware issue to a software or driver issue.
Would be handy to know your system specs, so that we atleast know what hardware we are talking about.
Guessing that this is what you're asking
Looking at how every value is at the worst possible it might be dying, but that doesn't excuse my HDD sometimes disconnecting from the PC because I'm pretty sure it ain't dying either
CPU - i3 4130
GPU - GTX 960 Strix
SSD - Intel 520 series
HDD - HGST 1TB hard drive
Case - Bitfenix Prodigy M
CPU cooler - Intel stock
i think that the best way to start is with a new clean system install.
If you have a spare HDD or SSD laying arround you could eventualy use that first to do a fresh clean Windows install on.
Maybe its just a software of driver issue.
System freezes can be caused by anything realy.
Best way to isolate the problem, is firstly to find out if the problem is hardware or software related.
The system is a month-old Windows 10 install, so it probably isn't a Windows issue, but might be.
Also sometimes, a "windows cannot load desktop because it is unavailable" message sometimes appears.
Could it really be just a problem with windows?
in early version of windows and "pre-release" technical preview, they had a bug, where windows would use your SSD on 100% for exactly 60 seconds, i was unable to find out what it was, but they fixed it.. or at least i think they did, since i dont have this bug on any pcs i have
but could be reason too, had it with intel and kingston drives
- try different sata port, different sata cable, check connector on SSD, power supply connector.... it still can be many things causing it
