I am helping my friend build his first computer. Here is the problem. He bought his computer parts in a bundle. The parts are listed below:
AMD FX-8350 Black Edition ASUS Sabertooth 990FX R2.0 Motherboard Kingston HyperX Savage 8GB DDR3-2133 MSI GTX 980
I am having trouble even getting this thing to POST. I've never worked with a Sabertooth before. All of the power connectors are connected, including the 8pin that people sometimes forget. Here is the issue. The status LEDs that the board uses while going through POST stop RED on the DRAM LED. I understand that something with the RAM is the issue, but I do not know what. I have tested both of his sticks on a different system with memtest and tried both of his sticks separately on all of the DIMMs. They all pass on memtest and it doesn't make a difference with passing POST. I am very confused on this issue.
Look at page 1-24 in the manual. It details a troubleshooting process using the MemOK button to test various settings. It should restart several times as it tests each set. That RAM is not on the QVL, so if troubleshooting doesn't work and you can't load the XMP profile in the BIOS, you may be SOL and have to hope you can return/exchange for 1600 or 1866. Specifications on Asus' website state:
I am really tempted to say that it is the fact that the RAM is too fast of a speed to be compatible with the board, but the reason I wanted to hold off saying it was the fact that my friend bought his RAM as part of a Newegg system builder bundle. I don't know the reputation of Newegg and its bundles so I'm not sure how likely it is that one of the bundles actually has incompatible parts.
Update. I brought some of my own RAM over to try to test on his computer. the one I used is Corsair Vengeance 1600 RAM and it's part of the recommended RAM specs. Ran through MemOK and still the DRAM LED is on. I'm starting to think that it might be a motherboard issue, although I'm not positive.
