Any other suggestions would be appreciated.
Shopping for a monitor is mostly subjective to size preference. From what I gather you're looking at a 24-ish inch 1080p screen.
When looking for a gaming monitor there are three things you should look for: input ports, response time, and panel type.
The easiest part is asking, does it accept the type output your video card requires? DVI, HMDI, DisplayPort? As long as you can check one you're good.
The lower the response time the better. Enthusiast and purists will tell you 5ms is unnacceptable and 2ms-1ms is desired. IMO 5ms is fine, but if you can find a 1ms monitor in your budget grab it!
Panel type mostly has an effect on viewing angle and color representation. IPS are by far the most popular but cost more.
Ignore contrast ratio numbers, they're made up and used as a marketing gimmick.
Reviews are your friend. If you see the last 5 reviews are bad then it's probably a good idea to look at a different monitor. Don't let 1 bad review scare you away from 10 good ones though. I hope that helps!
I just got an Asus VS239H-P monitor and I am thoroughly impressed with the quality overall from this monitor relative to its price point. I would highly recommend it. It has support for DVI and HDMI making your display solution easily upgraded by adding two more of these. It does lack display port support so if thats a game breaker your better going with something more high end. 1080p gaming/productivity applications this thing is where its at. I looked at that Samsung you mentioned as well but at microcenter I checked both display models out and the Asus was my choice.
