So I am more an audio noob then I would like to admit but I am not really set up for it as I just started to care about audio.
I recently picked up a Modmic 4.0 to put onto my AKG headphones and it works fine and amazingly. Only issues, is that with my current setup I am putting it on the mic input on the back of my motherboard(Asus sabertooth 990fx version 1) and I am getting a consistent hiss. I have to boost the mic in Windows to +20dB and it is making the hiss in the background very evident. I have the cables routed behind my moinitors which are on arms and along the back of my desk. Not sure what the best solution to this issue is and it is kind of driving me mad in mumble and recording, not to mention that I use my headset for work to call customers.
I am not sure if I need to add an amp(not sure anything about them other then the basic function they do) or if I need to check anything internally.

ok i have a similar mainboard (990fx gen2/r2.0) and i also had a constant hiss.
what you need to do is install the right sound driver for your mainboard from Asus and use the noise cancellation feature.
it completly removes any hissing for me.
I am running the correct drivers from Asus and it seems not help for me. I found something today on this issue right after I posted this about using a cheap USB adapter to clean it up and I will give it a try. What version drivers do you have though?

Mine just came in too and i ordered the same thing your looking to try which was the usb external soundcard. Hopefully it clears up the dirty audio in the background.
I order a monoprice USB adapter and it works fine now. I saw a post a few days ago and have been busy with work to say anything but it was someone with a similar issue. Well worth the $10 to me and I was making any order anyways so I might as well give it a try. I am going to pick up a second one for my zenbook so I can take this set up with me on the go to work away from the office.
