Mis matched GPUs and performance

Hardware question.
Can only afford to upgrade one of two GPUs in a dual GPU setup.
Any performance advantage at all for Unreal or should I simply swap the 2 older for the 1 newer(faster) GPU?

I thought there might be a slight advantage with mixed GPUs since one could drive the display and the other dedicated to Unreal.

You’ll be better served by a single newer GPU. Driving multiple displays from a single card hasn’t incurred a performance penalty for a while now, and the Unreal Editor doesn’t make use of SLI or analogous DX12 multi-GPU setups.

Plus, a newer card would let you play with Unreal Engine 5 features, and RT based effects in Unreal Engine 4.

I’ve had this impression that you were doing game development work in a virtual machine with Unreal Engine. Was I wrong? There is nothing wrong with a dual GPU setup if you are doing VFIO passthrough.

But then if you are just gaming and doing daily stuff, dual GPU setups have an unreasonable power consumption and both AMD and Nvidia unofficially killed their dual GPU support ages ago. Crossfire and SLI has been dead for a while now and there is no benefit in having more than one unless VMs and VFIO is involved.
