Mirrored VDEV question

The Story:

It was in a mirrored setup. One of the hard drives failed. Warranty replaced it but now the network card is unreliable. I decided to get a new 8 bay NAS. Kind of overkill but I wanted options for future expansion and more horsepower.

The Plan:

On the new nas, I’m just starting with 2 drives for storage. I plan to create a pool and put them in a mirror. Transfer the data from my remaining drive to the new pool. I’ll be using truenas scale.

The Questions:

If I add 2 more drives to the pool, is it easy to add it to the existing 2?

Can I mix and match sizes? For example, can I have a pair of 14tb and then add a pair of 12tb?

Thanks for the help.

Yes. As long as you add pairs. You will add a pair of drives (called a vdev) to the existing pool.

Also yes.

Thank you. I’ve been playing catchup on all of this. Just want to be sure I get it right the first time through. The last time I had to configure this stuff, hardware raid was the standard. Haha

Where is your old data? Is it in a ZFS pool?

If so, You can just move the disks from oldNAS to newNAS and import the ZFS pool and be good to go.

Unless of course you do not wish to use the old disks/pool.
