MiniPC Proxmox with Unraid

Hi @wendell, I just watched your Mini PC NAS video—great stuff! I know you’re into funky Linux setups, so I wanted to get your thoughts on something similar that I’m planning.

I’m looking at using a MiniPC (specifically the GMKtec NUCBOX EVO-X1) with Proxmox, and pass through the USB for Unraid. The goal is to have my home server and NAS in one while maintaining as much flexibility as possible.
I want to go with a USB drive bay enclosure, and that will also be passed through to Unraid, along with an M.2 SSD for caching. The home server will mostly be used for Plex, AdGuard, Home Assistant, Frigate, Arr apps, etc.

Do you think this is viable, or a good idea, at all? Are any pitfalls I should look out for, or any advice you can give me on this?

P.S. Love your content!

P.P.S You think Nvidia on Linux + OLED TVs are ever going to be stable? :joy:

im not wendell, but I am running unraid in a proxmox VM, I just passed the HBA through so unraid can do its thing with the drives on bare metal.

it works just fine, ive not passed through an m.2 to it, or used USB drives with unraid. but i dont know why it wouldnt work.

Thanks!

Sorry, late follow-up, hectic week.

Do you know how well proxmox works on the AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 300 series of processors?

I do not, but it works reasonably well with epyc processors. passing through multiple devices is a bit of work. but that may be a server board specific issue.
