I just completed my tax return.
I just realized that my reliable intel i5 6600K (16GB DDR4) system was struggling to get the job done. Just couple MS Office Spreadsheet, couple adobe reader tabs, couple chrome tabs used up all the 16GB memory and CPU usage was pegged above 80% most of time.
It looks like the minimum specs for filing tax return should be like:
8-core cpu
32GB ram

i did mine on a dell precision m6800 which is a laptop form 2016. I-7 4800MQ with 16GB DDR3 and it ran perfectly fine. did everything with libreoffice on Debian Bookworm.
I see. I am using Windows…
I ended up using google docs to view documents, and work through the spread sheet.
very unreasonable that any OS alone could cause such a system to become noticeably burdened. there must be something else you’ve got going on.
It’s 2D so I don’t think you’ll need much of a system at all.
And yes, it will do your tax for you.
Switch to Firefox and LibreOffice and you’ll be good with 1GB of RAM and a Celeron.
ms office is notorious to struggle all the time. Especially if you’re not on an SSD.
Just use this website:
Who created / developed the original pdf format?
Adobe’s software is slow and heavy. It also conmects to websites / servers without notification, so I just keep using foxit reader.
Also, Firefox is open-source, why on Earth are you using a privacy invasion chrome browser when open-source browser is available? Chromium isn’t good either, they’re still not able to remove all the google server code.
Even apple’s safari would be better, while closed-source, they use their independent web rendering engine WebKit which did start development from open-source KDE team.
My system runs fine with 2GB on windows 10.
Bear with me a sec but the minimum spec is probably a pencil and scratch paper. A Texas Instruments calculator would be an upgrade path. /s
Apologies
You shouldn’t need more than a dual core cpu with sse2 support tbh. If that’s not enough for that then l would definitely suspect software bloat ![]()
